Portrait of the Thaxters
Oregon Coast Sweethearts, Spring 1973
In the Spring of 1973 I was nosing out interesting folk for possible photographs who lived in the rural hinterlands of the small coastal community of Nehalem on the Oregon Coast. The Thaxter's proved to be a delight, a retired elderly couple interested in gardening, wildflowers and herbs. They are shown standing by their primitive cottage (by the Nehalem river) during a lull in the drizzle, typical for coastal weather. It remains a favorite feature photograph I made while working on the North Coast Times Eagle newspaper. Years later, the charm of the Thaxter's fairytale continues to resonate, with its straightforward joyous simplicity.
My documentary image caught the Thaxters on film utilizing a Nikon F film camera and 24mm Nikkor lens. The exposure was made on Kodak TRI-X film. The original negatives have been kept in dark storage and are in pristine condition

Hello, welcome to Song of a Sparrow, all-natural, handmade soaps and nature photography by Elisa Vanderschuit. All of my soaps are vegetable-based, made high up in the crisp mountain air of Lake Arrowhead, California, using the cold process method. I use a blend of natural ingredients: olive, palm, and coconut oils, and I also include cocoa butter and coconut milk to make for a hard but moisturizing and nourishing soap. My soap is great for the body and face, mild enough for sensitive skin, and it has a creamy and bubbly lather. I also make all natural "Spa Salts," lavender sachets, organic peppermint tea and hand-knit washcloths made of a soft, fluffy all-cotton yarn to go with the soaps. Seven different soaps are available: Pure Lavender, Rosemary Mint, Honey & Oats, Lavender-Peppermint, Cedarwood & Citrus, Eucalyptus & Sage, and Sunshine Squares (lemon soap with calendula petals).
