Descendants of Cherry Grove, Oregon Pioneers
Madcap Portrait With Kittens and Grand-Daughter
Washington County, Oregon
Photographed in September of 1977 and part of a popular regional photographic calendar entitled "Valley People." The documentary project concerned documenting descendants of the Tuality Plains settlers of Washington County, Oregon.
Shown are Birgetta Nixon and her grand-daughter with kittens near Cherry Grove -- taken over 32 years ago. The figures are representative of the last of a then living heritage. Birgetta was well known as the local historian... keeping track of Cherry Grove's Lore in her scrapbooks including several published books on its history.
One of my favorite images from the 1978 Valley People Calendar... and one of my favorite subjects and friend. Birgetta was the keeper of local history which comprised of numerous scrap books crammed full of older news articles, photos and memorabilia. In this impromptu photo we had just come out of her house (where we had just looked at some of her scrap books) and were greeted by her grand-daughter. Soon we were in a mad camp romp as Birgetta raced to gather nearby kitty cats for a "portrait" of herself and her grand-daughter. Old tools, buckets, nick knacks and farm irons can be seen on the side of her house in the background. Visiting with her was always free spirited... filled with an atmosphere of the unusual, the unexpected delight.

Ten minutes from the beautiful Pacific Ocean, one can walk miles, music of the deep ocean at their side, winds styling hair creatively, breathing intangible and intriguing, Life Forces. I love art and agree with Celine that imagination and creativity are essential to my life...living near water or surrounded by forest, moved by color and nature.
Long summer days of an only child found me happily cleaning house, ironing to San Francisco soul music, learning to dance with a friend, outside watering, skating in my San Francisco Bay town, riding buses endlessly to the dentist, See's Candy Store, the library or hooked on soap operas, my parents far away working. Looking at clouds and daydreaming while walking miles to and from school, saving 35 cents for french pastries or colorful fresh fruit from the Central Valley were my delights.

I have been interested in photography since the age of 13 when my dad gave me a vintage 2 1/4 camera. We lived in Izmir, Turkey at the time and that, in itself, was great inspiration. Friends were my canvas and it brought me great joy to capture them in a pure and simple way.....
For years I worked in the darkroom, experimenting with film developing ,printing like a mad woman, charged by chocolate and music, dancing my way across the floor in the darkness and feeling the magic of a film image arising upon a blank paper floating in the tray of liquid alchemy! What more could one ask for?
Although, today, I work in a digital darkroom, it is no less magical than before and a little adventure every time......
Please stop by from time to time and perhaps you might find a bit of levity and lightness to add to your day!
