KESEY PHOTOS FEATURED ON THE HUFF POST

October 16, 2010

"The year was 1976. I was going to visit Kesey with my pal photographer Clyde Keller. Clyde was unique. In 1968, while barely more than a teenager, he sent off photos to Robert Kennedy Presidential campaign headquarters in Washington and soon found himself in the company of RFK advisor Pierre Salinger, taking photos of Kennedy as he campaigned throughout Oregon. Keller created what Kesey liked best: art made magic. I never met anybody who could compress creativity into such a vital, efficient package. Clyde’s camera was a silent machine gun, he shot photos like movie directors shot film and we were soon to be off to record “Kesey World” for posterity." Text by Mark Christensen

"BILL MURRAY with KVAL TV Crew"

Photographed on Kesey's grounds (near his famous Barn Home) during the onset of the Poetic Hoo-Haw held in June 1976. A then unknown Bill Murray is shown as part of the crew documenting the event for KVAL TV in Eugene, Oregon. Ken Kesey is shown at center holding a "portable" video camera.

Part of a collection of photographs taken at the Ken Kesey Poetic Hoo Ha held at Kesey's Barn Home near Pleasant Hill (Eugene, Oregon) during the day. An evening concert took place at the University of Oregon's McArthur Court where such illumenaries as William Burroughs, Walt Curtis, Anne Waldman gave recitals. The party at the Barn Home attracted both local Oregon Poets such as Marty Christiansen, Walt Curtis and other notables such at Ken Babbs and Mark Christensen. Celebrities such as William Burroughs, Paul Krassner and a then unknown Bill Murray attended as well. Pictured is Bill Murray, 2nd from left, with Ken Kesey center stage at the beginning of the "Hoo-Haw" held in June 1976.

PRAISE FOR "ACID CHRIST"
Ken Kesey, LSD and the Politics of Ecstasy

PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY - Starred Review

"A fascinating hybrid.... An excellent cultural history that will also stand, perhaps ironically, as a valuable companion to [The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test].... Christensen focuses on the larger-than-life Kesey, "60s icon and enthusiastic proponent of illegal substances using his own experiences to bring the period to exubersnt life."

“Mark Christensen with Acid Christ has brought Ken Kesey to vibrant life—provocative, colorful, engaging and personal. What a pleasure to have a front-row seat into the mind of such a counter-culture icon.” —CHUCK PALAHNIUK, bestselling author, FIGHT CLUB and TELL ALL

“Contains not only interesting stuff I didn’t know about Kesey, but other information about the era—what led up to and followed it…[It] will prove to be the most amusing history book you’ve ever read!” —GRACE SLICK
