"Figure On Horse"
Wood Sculpture by his son
Clyde Leon Keller Jr.
1933, NFS (For Comparison To Painting Only)
____________________________________________________________

DESCRIPTION:

This is an original fine art work by Oregon Plein-Air Impressionist Painter, Clyde Leon Keller. The painting is signed in india ink. It is not dated but has a strong color palette reminiscent of his earlier 1930s works. "Keller The Art Man" is a highly regarded Oregon based painter whose paintings span over 60 years. Keller figures prominently in the first 100 years of Oregon painters with many museum references and auction listings/sales that reflect his continued popularity. His work reflects a continued dedication to the principles of 19th century landscape impressionism with strong influences from artists of the British Royal Academy such can be found in the works by Sir Alfred East. Local early teens and twenties influences include Charles McKim and Joesph Knowles. Keller was a co-founder of The Oregon Society of Artists. Early meetings (1929) were held at his downtown Portland Art Studio and Store.

This particular work is unusual for its inclusion of the figure on a horse. His son, Clyde Leon Keller Jr., had created a wood sculpture in 1933 of a figure mounted on a horse which we have included for comparison to the painting. According to his son, Clyde Jr., this is a rare example of his father honoring his own work, in this case a figure on a horse. Other rare examples (from the 1930s) include hunting and fishing subject matter Keller Sr. used to honor his son. The wood sculpture is NOT FOR SALE, but we thought you'd enjoy seeing it. The painting shows bold use of color and deft brush work. In short, one of his better works transformed by the figure on the horse.

CONDITION: The signed painting and frame are in excellent and near pristine condition. One of Keller's business cards has been attached to the back.

"The Path Through The Woods"
SOLD

Keller is considered one of the important plein air painters in the first hundred years of Oregon art history. This is a beautiful impressionistic work (indicative of his best painting) from 1916 by Clyde Leon Keller. Front Signed and Dated, 1916. The Back Board is titled. "The Path Through The Woods." All hand writing is in India ink, typical of paintings he signed from the 1910-1920s. Condition is excellent with clean vibrant colors. No observable flaws or deterioration. Painted on a watercolor hard board.

NOTE: This is indeed a rare work.  Keller painted few watercolors, comparatively speaking... so do not expect to see anything remotely like this offered for sale, especially from this era or in this condition.

Purchase includes an original Keller Store Business Store Receipt (as pictured) a restored Photograph from the late teens (about the time this work was created) and his Business Card. As mentioned, this work is held between hinged acid free foam core boards and cradled by acetate corner mounts.

"WALL"

This smaller study of a nude by Louis Bunce is not dated but was acquired in the late 1960s at the Fountain Gallery. It is similar in style and concept to "Interlude #1, a 1965-66 oil, graphite on canvas shown on the Laura Russo website archive. The signature can be viewed lower right. Condition is excellent with only minor cosmetic wear to the wood fir frame. The original hand written information is affixed to the back board of the frame with some prior water damage noted. Note the sticker top right gives both artist and title. The painting is in its original state. It is quite beautiful!
