Seattle & Puget Sound Seattle & Puget Sound

Original fine art Clyde Keller portfolio of his vintage Seattle and Puget Sound photographs can be viewed with an eye on history dating from the early 1960s through the 1980s. The portfolio includes images and portraits of the farmers, artisans and street musicians of the Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square areas of downtown Seattle. Two of his vintage 1980s urban landscapes were purchased for use by the new Museum of History and Science. Historical images of the the resumption of trade between China and the United States from 1979 can be viewed in this collection. Clyde's historical and vintage subject matter encompasses the descendants of pioneers as he found them in the rural landscapes of the Skagit Valley.

"OLYMPIC SPLENDOR" captures a young deer on the slopes of Hurricane ridge with the Olympic Mountains in the background. This was taken in August-- a time when meteorite showers are common especially from this vantage point. In this frame sunset is upon us and the last rays of light bolt across the field to illuminate the young Elk. We stayed on to watch the "falling stars." The Olympic Mountain Range is located on the Olympic Peninsula of western Washington in the United States. They are part of the Pacific Coast Range. The location for this photograph is withinside the Olympic national park, and near Port Angeles.

"Olympics Arising" captures a feeling of ascendancy of a young mountain range being formed by uplifting forces as tectonic plates collide. In this frame sunset is upon us and the last rays of light strike the four mountaintops of Mt. Olympus. The range was named by English captain John Meares, who reportedly thought they were beautiful enough for the Gods to dwell there-- referring to the Greek mythology.

We stayed on to watch the "falling stars." The Olympic Mountain Range is located on the Olympic Peninsula of western Washington in the United States. They are part of the Pacific Coast Range. They are surrounded by the Strait of Juan De Fuca to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Puget Sound to the East. The location for this photograph is withinside the Olympic National Park, and near Port Angeles.

This vintage documentary arts image captures a feeling of being at a restaurant located inside the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. Featured is a Rainier Beer neon sign. It is placed in a view looking out a window into an atmospheric setting, typical of darkly lit and foreboding Winter skies. This image was part of a larger documentary project which spanned several years and included the popular 1981 photographic calendar, "Market & Square." The calendar was dedicated to the many people who fought for the preservation of Pioneer Square and the Pike Place Market... and to the Artisans, Farmers, Street Musicians, Merchants and everyone who has ever known the Market and Square

This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy faithfully capturing this moody historical Pike Market subject. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is clear sleeved on foam core board) and ready for framing.

Seattle's Finest on Horseback
Mounted police facing the old King Dome

This view from Occidental Plaza was taken in the summer of 1980 and marked the beginning for the popular "Market & Square" photographic calendar published in the fall of 1980 throughout the Seattle area. The King Dome, now demolished, is revisited in this photographic homage to the "old" Seattle... it is one of the 12 images selected for the calendar which offered unique images of the authentic Pike Place Market and the Pioneer Square area. One of my favorite images, the mounted policemen shown in silhouette, set against the backdrop of the Seattle King Dome, is a precious remembrance capturing the unvarnished flavor of Seattle on the verge of change.

"DIZZY AT JAZZ ALLEY"
1990 Jazz Alley Performance
Seattle, Washington

DESCRIPTION: 1990 photograph of a playful Dizzy Gillespie at Jazz Alley in Seattle, Washington. The Signature is from this session and has been incorporated into the print. John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (October 21, 1917 - January 6, 1993) was instrumental in founding Afro-Cuban Jazz.

The type of camera I used for this series of portraits was a Rolleiflex TLR and Nikon F2 with Nikkor Lenses. This photograph was taken with an 180mm f/2.8 Nikkor, a personal favorite for available light documentary photography. I returned every night while he performed to enjoy his great music... and he sometimes acknowledged my photographic enthusiasm in the affirmative.  This is one such occasion.  Please enjoy!

This poetic image of a street musician holding his mandolin is from a larger 1980 art calendar project entitled "Market & Square."  Seattle often has a blue cast to its light, particularly in the darker months and especially late in the afternoon on partially cloudy days.  The concurrence of the ferry boat in the distance completes the picture to capture a wistful feeling and romance of the Pike Place Market overlooking Puget Sound, here observed in a special moment made nearly 30 years ago.

This archival color giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy faithfully capturing this historical Pioneer Square subject. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is shrink wrapped on foam core board) and ready for framing.

"Rainbow in The Valley" captures a sectional view of the Skagit Valley in a pastoral rendering of inspirational beauty shaped by a cloud cover and rainbow breaking through the diffused light in the distance. Ironically this tranquil scene was taken just a few days before the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens.

This poetic image is included in a larger documentary project concerning the folk and history of the inhabitants of the Skagit Valley.

World's Oldest Trucker

Skagit County, Concrete Hamlet Backwoodsman
Portrait of Rodney Gray at 97 years

This vintage documentary arts image captures 97 year old Rodney Gray posed by his all chrome Mack Logging Truck. Photographed in April, 1980 near Concrete, Washington.  The photograph was taken during the making of the published photographic essay, "Skagit Sring."  In this photo I used a Nikon F2 with a 24mm Nikkor wide angle lens. Rodney was quite engaging and proud of his capabilities. He said the only thing that bothered him was being a little hard of hearing in one ear... remarkable for a man nearing 100 years.

Mike Rust's Barn Home

This vintage documentary arts image captures Pacific NW Artist Mike Rust returning to his Skagit Valley Barn-Home which was located on the floodplains of Fir Island. During the walk with him over his 27 acres, Mike remarked that one day he would move his Barn -Home from one end of the field to the other. He has since become a well established San Juan Islands' artist, sculpting in wood, clay, concrete and bronze. His oil paintings (found in several galleries including the Chimera Gallery on Lopez Island) are representational and mostly nature base.

This impressionistic image of the Smith Tower was taken in January of 1981. The fog was thick and partially obscured the view of Seattle's most venerable historic building, once it's most modern "skyscraper" and now revered for its beauty.

This is a most imposing rendering and towering perspective of the Smith Tower as it is partially engulfed by the fog. The image colors reflect the January light with the sun low on the skyline providing a diffused sunlight-- here shown partially illuminating the last few stories on the tower itself. I couldn't help but be reminded of the fantastic Flatiron Building in Manhattan, New York-- photographed by Alfred Steiglitz over 107 years ago.

The print is made to museum grade standards and should last well over 150 years under normal display conditions. This is a handsome print of a great Seattle landmark. Note that the copyright information does not appear on the final signed print.
