DESCRIPTION: 1990 photograph of a playful Dizzy Gillespie at Jazz Alley in Seattle, Washington. The Signature is from this session and has been incorporated into the print. John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (October 21, 1917 - January 6, 1993) was instrumental in founding Afro-Cuban Jazz.
The type of camera I used for this series of portraits was a Rolleiflex TLR and Nikon F2 with Nikkor Lenses. This photograph was taken with an 180mm f/2.8 Nikkor, a personal favorite for available light documentary photography. I returned every night while he performed to enjoy his great music... and he sometimes acknowledged my photographic enthusiasm in the affirmative. This is one such occasion. Please enjoy!

"SEATTLE'S FINEST ON HORSEBACK" Mounted Police Facing The Old King Dome
This view from Occidental Plaza was taken in the summer of 1980 and marked the beginning for the popular "Market & Square" photographic calendar published in the fall of 1980 throughout the Seattle area. The King Dome, now demolished, is revisited in this photographic homage to the "old" Seattle... it is one of the 12 images selected for the calendar which offered unique images of the authentic Pike Place Market and the Pioneer Square area. One of my favorite images, the mounted policemen shown in silhouette, set against the backdrop of the Seattle King Dome, is a precious remembrance capturing the unvarnished flavor of Seattle on the verge of change.

This historic captures highlights the official resuming of trade relations between China and the United States, April 18, 1979. Shown are the first Chinese sailors, fresh off their cargo vessel, the Liu Lin Hai, landing on the docks (Pier 86) of the Port of Seattle. The Liu Lin Hai docked at Port of Seattle's Pier 86. The event was historically important with many dignitaries attending, including Senator Brock Adams. The 637 foot Liu Lin Hai entered Washington’s Puget Sound on April 18, 1979 and tied up at Seattle’s Pier 86 grain terminal. It was the first time in nearly 30 years that a Chinese commercial vessel had entered a U.S. Port.
Originally published in 1979 by the Port of Seattle and the U.S. Feed and Grain Council. Recently used in 2010 for a promotion by the Washington State Department of Commerce for use in China.

This poetic image of a street musician holding his mandolin is from a larger 1980 art calendar project entitled "Market & Square." Seattle often has a blue cast to its light, particularly in the darker months and especially late in the afternoon on partially cloudy days. The concurrence of the ferry boat in the distance completes the picture to capture a wistful feeling and romance of the Pike Place Market overlooking Puget Sound, here observed in a special moment made nearly 30 years ago.

"ANGELINA GENZALE and PASQUELINA VERDI"

This celebratory photograph withinside the cargo vessel captures this normalization of relations. Shown are Chinese and American Dignitaries in the Captain's Dining Room on board the cargo vessel, Liu Lin Hai. Print measures 10x15 on 12x18 photographic paper. The Lui Lin Hair docked at Port of Seattle's Pier 86. Port.
I could not have panned this celebratory photograph; the atmosphere was festive with many important dignitaries attending from the two countires including the Vice Premier of China, Deng Xiaoping, and the Secretary of Transportation to the United States, Brock Adams. The event was the result of efforts made by W. James Amoss Jr. of Lykes Bros. Steamship Co and Stan Barer, a lawyer to permit the calling of cargo ships between the two countries. The Liu Lin Hai, a COSCO cargo ship, calling upon the Seattle Port under the Chinese Flag, opened a new page of Sino-U.S. history. It was an historical turning point that marked the beginning of a new era of trade.

This vintage documentary arts image captures Pacific NW Artist Mike Rust returning to his Skagit Valley Barn-Home which was located on the floodplains of Fir Island. This vintage documentary arts image captures 97 year old Rodney Gray posed by his all chrome Mack Logging Truck. Photographed in April, 1980 near Concrete, Washington. The photograph was taken during the making of the published photographic essay, "Skagit Sring." In this photo I used a Nikon F2 with a 24mm Nikkor wide angle lens.
