"PORTRAIT OF OPTIMISM"
In this vintage documentary arts portrait, I captured Bobby Kennedy prior to the 1968 Presidential Campaign. Kennedy visited Portland, Oregon and spoke at the Labor Temple in the Fall of 1966. The Senator is shown in an engaging portrait of optimism characteristic of his positive vision for progressive change. This is my first portrait of Kennedy taken with a Nikon F film camera, loaded with Kodak Tri-X and equipped with a 105mm Nikkor tele lens.
WARREN BEATTY PORTRAIT "DARK EYES" Featured as the cover photo on a new book about Warren Beatty, authored by Peter Biskind and published by Simon and Schuster. The 640 page hard cover book will be available in February 2010. It is entitled, "STAR: How Warren Beatty Seduced America."
In this vintage documentary arts portrait, I captured Warren Beatty on the sidewalks of Portland adjacent to the Benson Hotel. I asked for this pose (hand on chin) with and without his wearing sun glasses. This image combines both poses so that his eyes become visible through his dark sun glasses. Since we both stood our ground this became technically feasable making for a most unusual portrait. I used a Nikon F film camera, loaded with Kodak Tri-X and equipped with a 55mm Nikkor lens. The negatives are pristine producing a sharp looking print!

"ALONE"
Compelling, definitive portrait of this most notable American taken less than three weeks before his death. This original documentary arts photograph was taken at the Portland International Airport. This view of RFK, walking alone, is at the Portland, Oregon International Airport. Photographed in May of 1968 during the May Oregon Primary. This portrait was unplanned due to a lull in the day's campaign schedule; I was the only photographer to view this private moment. His dog, Freckles is shown accompanying him (to the stage left) in the grass. A 300mm telephoto Nikkor lens was used to emphasize the isolation. This pose, depicts one of the few quiet moments of the turbulent Oregon May Presidential Primary. Freckles was always close to Robert during these last three weeks.

"RFK WHISTLE STOP" Albany, Oregon Train Depot, May 18, 1968 RFK Speech: American Foreign Policy, Vietnam and Nationalism
In this classic piece of Americana I was able to photograph one of the last "whistle stops" with Robert Kennedy addressing a crowd of supporters from inside a caboose. Robert is shown in partial silhouette as I peered out from the rear of the Caboose interior, north towards the Albany Train Depot. I waited for Kennedy to hold his hand out to greet the crowd in a sequence of 6 exposures... the result is a wonderful "decisive moment" catching the crowd unanimously in rapt attention. Selected by the RFK Center for Human Rights in a Fall Promotion for the renaming of the Triborough Bridge (RFK Bridge) with the NYC Transit Authority. Voted "Best Picture" by Pacific NW Photogtaphers at the 2001 Digicraft Annual Awards.

"RFK WHISTLE STOP CABOOSE VIEWPOINT" May 18, 1968 Whistle Stop U.S. Presidential Campaign
This unique Whistle Stop documentary arts photo of Bobby Kennedy was captured from inside a caboose at the Albany, Oregon Train Station. This is an unusual composition with a subjective point of view. Robert is shown with his hand to his head, a pose which can also be seen in our speech portrait of him entitled, "Pathos." Here he shown in deep shadow. The evacotive (tragic) mood created by Kennedy's pose is framed and juxtaposed by the tuba (right) adding to the drama.
The photograph was taken with an 28mm wide angle Nikkor lens, a personal favorite for working at close quarters but preserving a natural perspective. Exposures were made on Kodak TRI-X film and the pristine negative was used for the making of this "full bodied" black and white photographic print.

"RFK ABOUT THE WAR"
Here is a striking1968 Portrait of Robert Kennedy as he was about to enter into the Oregon Primary U.S. Presidential race.
