RFK Center Collection RFK Center Collection

33 original Clyde keller documentary photographs are incorporated into this special photographic collection prepared for the Robert F. Kennedy Center For Justice and Human Rights. Special thanks to Lynn Delaney, Director of the Center and especially to Andy Dumain for his help in coordinating the selection process. These are compelling personal photographs made by Clyde Keller as he worked directly with Robert Kennedy's campaign. One of two images are incorporated into Rory Kennedy's forthcoming HBO documentary about her mother Ethel. Of note, Robert is shown set against the backdrop of a large American flag. Intimate photos of the Kennedy's beach walk round out the collection. All prints are of museum grade archival quality and may be purchased as a group (as shown) or individually. Prints up to 20x30 inches may be ordered by request.

Robert F. Kennedy Photograph
"Standing Tall"
Oregon Presidential Campaign
Astoria, Oregon May1968

Kennedy fought for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is still relevant today. In this documentary portrait, RFK is shown in standing tall atop a convertible parade car while visiting the Bumblebee Tuna Facility in Astoria, Oregon. Later he was to visit a sick Russian sailor nearby at the Astoria Hospital. His concerns for a thaw in relations with Russia were made during this short visitation. Following in the footsteps of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, he renounced the unworkable dogmas that held both Russia and the U.S. in seemingly intractable positions. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.

The Astoria Speech

May 24, 1968 Campaign Speech, Astoria, Oregon

Included in the RFK Center Photo Collection

Classic 1968 photograph of Robert Kennedy with the American Flag as a partial backdrop. This photograph dates from the US presidential campaign during the May Oregon Primary. The speech took place in Astoria near the Oregon Coast.  I used a 300mm Nikkor telephoto, a personal... razor sharp favorite. Exposures were made on Kodak Ektachrome 64 film. The original transparencies and negatives have been kept in dark storage and are in pristine condition.

In this classic piece of Americana I was able to photograph one of the last "whistle stops" with Robert Kennedy addressing a crowd of supporters from inside a caboose. Robert is shown in partial silhouette as I peered out from the rear of the Caboose interior, north towards the Albany Train Depot. I waited for Kennedy to hold his hand out to greet the crowd in a sequence of 6 exposures... the result is a wonderful "decisive moment" catching the crowd unanimously in rapt attention.  Voted "Best Picture" of the year in 2001 at the annual Digicraft Pacific NW Print Competition. Selected by the RFK Center for Human Rights in a Fall 2008 Promotion for the renaming of the Triborough Bridge (RFK Bridge) with the NYC Transit Authority.

"Mr. Keller's photographs document America at the very highest level of photographic arts. To be in the moment of Whistle Stop, though the lens of Mr. Keller is to connect with history in a beautiful way. The print was exquisite, the service and responsiveness of Mr. Keller truly outstanding. Mr. Keller's archive is arguably the best value available on the web for the serious photography lover\collector."  Washington DC Photographer, William Boling

In documentary photograph, taken at the downtown Portland Kennedy Campaign Headquarters, female supporters stand holding their placards in anticipation of Bobby's arrival.  Many signs are featured including one with a slogan entitled,  "BEAT 'EM BOBBY."

Robert made many speeches during the Oregon Campaign and spoke out strongly for the advancement of Civil and Human Rights as well as about ending the Vietnam War. "Ripple of Hope" is lifted from these times and is concurrent with his campaign speeches made during the last three weeks of his life.

On May 24, 1968-- Robert Kennedy visited Astoria, Oregon and points south along the Oregon Coastline. In this documentary arts photo Robert is shown set against the backdrop of a beautiful blue sky in a portrait of optimism.

Robert Kennedy's positive vision for nuclear disarmament, world peace and for the ending of the Vietnam War were projected to audiences world wide throughout these last few weeks before his assassination.

The camera I used for all of the Kennedy photographs was an original motorized Nikon F with Nikkor Lenses. The photograph was taken with a 28mm Nikkor, a personal favorite for fast available light photography. Exposures were made on Kodak Ektachrome film. The original transparencies and negatives from my Kennedy Collection have been kept in dark storage and are in pristine condition for their vintage.
