Kennedy fought for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is still relevant today.  In this documentary portrait, taken at Portland State College, RFK addressed the relevance of the "Spirit of Youth" mindful of the "Revolutionary Spirit" that led to the foundation of the United States. He spoke of "a temper of the will" when dealing with our adversaries. Robert argued for ending the War in Vietnam, citing that the North Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, had quoted the American Declaration of Independence as their inspiration for them to declare independence from the French. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.

Oregon Coast, May 24, 1968

This impromtu portait was made "on the fly" so to speak as I made my way ahead of the ensemble to photograph Bobby just before he made his famous beach run.  It was captured on the Northern Oregon Coast near the Peter Iredale shipwreck. This image dates from the May 1968 Oregon Primary Presidential Campaign. Exposures were made on Kodak Ektachrome film. The original transparencies and negatives have been kept in dark storage and are in pristine condition for their vintage. This popular print faithfully captures the original vibrancy and color of the original chrome.

Kennedy's vision for nuclear disarmament, world peace and for the ending of the Vietnam War were projected to audiences world wide throughout these last few weeks before his assassination.

The camera I used for all of the Kennedy photographs was an original Motorized Nikon F with Nikkor Lenses. The photograph was taken with an 28mm Nikkor, a personal favorite for fast available light pictorial (press)photography. Exposures were made on Kodak Tri-X B&W film. "Pathos"
Portrait from the May 1968 U.S. Presidential Campaign
Portland State University, Portland, Oregon

This vintage documentary arts portrait of Robert Kennedy was made as he was about to enter into the Oregon Primary presidential race.
I felt that there was a sense of tragedy about RFK mixed in with his charisma... especially as caught in this telling (off-guard) moment. This disturbingly prophetic pose captures the subjective undercurrents that were always with him, especially regarding the assassination of his brother five years earlier. The photograph was taken with a customized motor Nikon F equipped with a 300mm Nikkor lens. Exposures were made on Kodak Tri-X film. The original negative has been kept in dark storage and is in pristine condition producing a superb print of beguiling tonality.

____________________________________________

As a complement to my recent Julian Assange Art Print here is my tribute to Robert Kennedy who championed dissent and peace.
____________________________________________

Robert was a living embodiment of his slain brother. He represents the resurrection of the promise that he and his brother embodied while in the White House. That restoration, after Dallas, took many forms: Civil Rights at home, Human Rights abroad and the end of Apartheid for all people. His message and charisma and his policies were understood as ending all of the cruel and artificial divisions allowing him to bring a process of healing between people.

In this art print Robert is shown making a stump speech captured during a whistle stop train tour. His inspirational words are shown as a backdrop (behind him across the sky) in a beautiful archival print. RFK argued for ending the War in Vietnam, citing that the North Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, had quoted the American Declaration of Independence as their inspiration for them to declare independence from the French. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.

SPEECH EXCERPT DISPLAYED IN ART PRINT:

“What the students of Poland now fight for, what the students of Czechoslovakia appear to have won is not a victory of ideology; it is a victory of the spirit. This spirit has been heard in the defined courtrooms of Moscow, in the streets of Spain, and in the schools all over the United States. It is he spirit of youth. It's not a time of life, but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a preference for courage over timidity; of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. It is the spirit which knows the difference between force and reason. It does not accept the failures of today as the excuse for the cruelties of tomorrow. It knows the wisdom of Archimedes and that says, 'Give me a place to stand and I can move the world,' and youth is finding a place to stand. That is the spirit I want to see return to the United States of America and that is why I'm running for President of the United States.” RFK- April 17, 1968

In this documentary portrait, RFK is shown greeting supporters from the back of a caboose. The location is at the Portland Train Depot, the departure point for the tour. My camera was placed above and over Robert's shoulder to achieve this dramatic view. It was one of the last Whistle Stop Tours ever made in American Presidential Campaigns. During the tour through Oregon City, Harrisburg, Junction City, Corvallis, Albany and Eugene he spoke out strongly about ending the Vietnam War. Following in the footsteps of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, he renounced the unworkable dogmas that held both Russia and the U.S. in seemingly intractable positions. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.

Oregon Campaign, May 18, 1968
Rally held at Eugene, Oregon

This documentary arts photo captures the  special repoire Robert held with many groups of people. Radiance of his personality, his charisma and his message all combined into one cloth. This was a palpable radiance that could be seen, touched and felt.  Robert is shown connecting with a group who gathered to both meet and hear him at the University of Oregon Stadium in Eugene, Oregon on May 18, 1968. His outreach connected repeatedly wherever he appeared during his last few weeks in response to his energy and profound message. Robert was a living embodiment of his slain brother. He represents the resurrection of the promise that he and his brother embodied while in the White House. That restoration, after Dallas, took many forms: Civil Rights at home, Human Rights abroad and the end of Apartheid for all people. One of my more kinetic documentary images of the campaign motorcade offers an expansive view of Robert's departure to the University of Oregon to speak before students and faculty.  The event was part of Bobby's Whistle Stop tour and the last city to be visited on this day.  RFK is shown amidst a very busy street scene with his bodyguard, Bill Barry shown stage right.    His determination to end the Vietnam War was presented at the stadium less than 30 minutes later.

The photograph was taken with a 28mm Nikkor lens.  Exposures were made on Kodak TRI-X film.  I used the original pristine negative to produce this razor sharp, brilliantly toned print.

In this documentary portrait, RFK is shown in standing tall atop a convertible parade car while visiting the Bumblebee Tuna Facility in Astoria, Oregon. Later he was to visit a sick Russian sailor nearby at the Astoria Hospital. His concerns for a thaw in relations with Russia were made during this short visitation.

Kennedy fought for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is still relevant today. In this documentary portrait, RFK is shown greeting children after addressing the Kennedy Action Corp at Sunnyside Grade School in Portland, Oregon. He followed in the footsteps of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, to encourage citizen participation in domestic and international programs such as the Peace Corps which would make real differences in the lives of people. Like his elder brother he renounced the unworkable dogmas that held both Russia and the U.S. in seemingly intractable positions. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.

Here is a beautiful reminder of Robert Kennedy . This portrait dates from the US presidential campaign during the May Oregon Primary. The photograph was taken at one of his Whistle Stop Stump Speeches with a 300mm Nikkor telephoto, a personal... razor sharp favorite.

Please visit a wonderful site on FB entitled, Robert F.Kennedy- Taken From Us, But Never Forgotten created by Jordan Tekelve: http://www.facebook.com/clyde.keller1?ref=profile#!/group.php?gid=2207306288

Please enjoy... and by all means let us hear from you.

Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy (February 22, 1932 - August 25, 2009)

My portrait of  a young Ted Kennedy illustrates him speaking at a press conference at the Sheraton Hotel (near the Lloyd Center in SE Portland) while campaigning for Bobby.  His appearance was brief but important for his brother and his bid for the U.S. presidency.  My available light photo was exposed on Kodak Tri-X film using a 55mm "Micro" Nikkor lens.

This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tone and brilliancy faithfully capturing this important historical figure in American politics. The B&W negative from which this print is made is in pristine condition with little if any deterioration. Makes a strong impression with excellent scale ar this larger size. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

"The Art of Peace"
Portland State College Speech
April 17, 1968
