Oregon Landscapes
Original Clyde Keller panoramic imagery and documentary photographs drawn from over forty years that he has captured the magnificent Oregon terrain. In this portfolio you can view rare Native American artifacts placed back into their historical settings. Evidence of early pioneering in Central Oregon's austere landscapes are captured as he found them in the Fort Rock, Christmas Valley and Summer Lake regions. Clyde's wide field panoramas invite the eye to explore with him in his travels throughout the state. Particular attention is given to the volcanic regions of the High Cascades. This is a most personal view taken by a Native Oregonian as he has experienced the land and its peoples presented in a series of beautiful black and white and color fine art museum grade giclee prints.

1963, Cannon Beach Storm, large art print,, Clyde Keller photo
Cannon Beach Storm View from Ecola State Park, Christmas Day 1963
My Christmas Day storm photo has remained one of my personal favorites for nearly 48 years. It was captured in the midst of blustery winds and incessant rain. I had made a trek through the woods at the south end of Ecola Park from my grandmother's beach house. Luckily, there was a lull as I emerged from the woods to capture a brief burst of distant sunlight breaking through the dense cloud cover. Still, my lens had to be protected from the rain and the storm resumed less than a minute after I captured this memorable seascape. Please enjoy... I've yet to see anything like this since!

1999, Under the Overpass, Clyde Keller Photo, Abstract Study
Under the Overpass A Double Negative of Tonal Values in the Abstract Hood River, Oregon
Things are not quite what they seem in this surreal photograph of an underpass found near the Columbia River just out of Hood River. In this study of an imposing concrete bulwark, negative and positive values are inverted, rendering the concrete forms with surprising results. The manipulation of tonal values presents a sunlit feeling rippling withinside the shadowy areas whilst the bolts of light striking diagonally across the face of the wall possess an expanded range of tonality and luminosity. I used a 15mm Nikkor ultrawide lens to take in the entire structure. This is an image to be studied and to enjoy... both in the abstract and concrete.

2008 Oregon Outback, On Sacred Grounds, Clyde Keller Photo
On Sacred Grounds Oregon Outback at Summer lake Ancient mortar and pestle in historical setting May 22, 2008 near Paisley
An intimate photographic view of stone artifacts ( Mortar & Pestel) placed back into their natural setting at a lake shore once inhabited by the Snakes Indians (including Northern Paiute, Pitt and Shoshone) for a period of nearly 7,000 years. These semi-nomadic gatherers inhabited the Lakeview region of Oregon. Artifacts are quite similar to those displayed at the Favell Museum in Klamath Falls. Many of the examples on display at the museum were found during the foundation excavation while the facility was being built and represent works by the Klamath and Modoc indians. The volcanic materials from which these Mortars were made extend eastward into the Lakeview region. Our Mortar and Pestel came from a farm over 85 years ago (1920s) in that area. It is a particularly beautiful unspoiled example in unbroken condition.

2008 Oregon Outback, Sacred Shoreline, Clyde Keller Photo
Sacred Shoreline Oregon Outback, Summer Lake Native American Indians site Winterly dust storm approaches
The Snakes Indians used to inhabit the very ground upon which I stood to take this eerie pictorial documentary landscape. I couldn't help but be reminded of how much this scene location resembled some of the Edward Curtis lake shore photos of Native American Indians.
It was supposed to be Spring... but dust storms raged across the high desert plains engulfing this beautiful lake area. That night a lightning storm ensued, taking out our cabin's power along with the water supply. In the morning it was snowing and it sure felt like Winter. But this remarkable color image was only possible because of such dramatic and unusual weather conditions.

2009, The Snows of Time, Clyde Keller photo art print
The Snows of Time Fantasia from the Oregon Cascades Maupin Highlands
I sometimes imagine vistas from my back door that conjure romantic notions of far off places like the Himalayas. In this interpretive montage, rugged Oregon Cascades mountains are brought close to home, so to speak, to give dimension to our Tibetan figure of stone who is seemingly burdened with new fallen snow. This bit of impressionist whimsy can be yours to enjoy in this beautiful art print, signed of course by yours truly.
Clyde's museum grade print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy capturing this snowy Oregon Cascades subject. Makes a strong impression in this larger 16x20 inch format. 2011 abstract print, SKI BOWL, Clyde Keller photo, Oregon Cascades
"SKI BOWL" Abstract time lapse photography of highway vehicle lights Mt. Hood at Government Camp Copyright © 2011 by Clyde Keller
Just after Thanksgiving I found myself on a trek over the snowy Cascades enroute to Portland with my pal Richard Bortels who was delivering needed blood for the Red Cross from our home in Bend, Oregon. This abstract image was photographed at the highway summit of Mt. Hood as we approached the Ski Bowl turnoff. The patterns of rich colors and lights are the result of about a one minute exposure coupled with multiple strobe lights bursts to "nail" where in the world we were. Of course the driving conditions were hazardous and the snow was mixing with ice to make this particular occasion exhilarating. The time lapse blurs were made keeping time (it's all in the wrist action with the lens acting as the nodal point) to a Kate Bush music CD-- yes, you might say this captures a rhythm inspired by one of my favorite British vocalist and performance artists whose newly released Lp record and CD, "Fifty Words For Snow" seemed perfect for the occasion. I want to also thank my Etsy pal, Vicki Diane whose expression of wanting to come along prompted a good measure of creativity from me-- hope everyone likes the result.
This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy faithfully capturing this Romantic High Cascades subject. Makes a strong impression in this larger 16x20 inch format. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.
Note: No typography appears on the art print. It is signed on the white border beneath the image.

Abandoned Chevy Truck, vintage 1977 Clyde Keller photo
Abandoned Chevy Truck Cedar Canyon Road Wayside Rural Washington, County, Oregon
Pictured is a view of an abandoned flatbed Chevy truck found in the hinterlands (back roads) of the Washington County Farming Country -- as it looked over three decades ago. The photo celebrates the valley's heritage. Photographed in September of 1977 and part of a popular photographic calendar entitled "Valley People." One of my favorite images from the 1978 Valley People Documentary Series, but archived for too many years. Now, 34 years later, with much of Washington County engulfed by change, these photographs are a precious historical remembrance, capturing the unvarnished flavor of its heritage.

After the Storm, Summer Lake bath house, Clyde Keller photo
After the Storm Summer Lake Bath House Oregon Outback near Paisley
The photograph was taken May 22, 2008 near Paisley (Chewaucan) Oregon. The panorama offers a sweeping view of the grounds at the Summer Lake Hot Springs. Pictured is the historic bathhouse built in 1927 and still in use. The hot mineral water flows from spring at 113 degrees and cools as it flows into the bathhouse. Nearby the Oregon Outback Scenic Biway follows the shoreline of Summer Lake once inhabited by the Six Tribes of the Klamaths and their predecessors. During the afternoon dust clouds were storming over the highly alkaline lake. The intensity of clouds (left) and dramatic lighting was indicative of a severe change in weather which brought snow later in the evening, unusual for a region plagued by drought.
This is an ultra wide field panorama (106x67 degrees)

An Owl Amongst Poppies, abstract art print, Clyde Keller photo
An Owl Amongst Poppies Abstract study of sculpture in garden Bend, Oregon
The Owl is shown "face-on" to heighten the sense of a flattened two dimensional plane. Within the framework of the composition, abstract line and color are juxtaposed to the three dimensional pictorial compositional elements... making for a delightful visual potpouri. The Central Oregon image captures a wistful feeling which has been fully realized in the print making process.

Ancient Sitka Ghost Tree, Neskowin, Oregon, Clyde Keller photo
Ancient Sitka Ghost Tree 1,700 Years old, partially petrified From a subduction earthquake, Neskowin, Oregon coast
These are the remains of a Sitka forest once standing along the Oregon Coastline at Neskowin, partially petrified and nearly 1,700 years old. The trees were exposed for the first time (just recently) when the beach sand was not replaced after winter storms, something that is new for this coastline and may be the result of global warming. Now barnacles grow on them and they are beginning to decompose. The next quake is overdue, so please enjoy. This scene will vanish when it is subducted during the next quake. Photographed on September 26, 2009.

Back Lot Fords Late 1930s Americana NW Neighborhood, Portland, Oregon
From the Doubles series
Please enjoy this exquisite image of old 1930s (circa 1936) Ford automobiles in my series of doubles comprising of concurrent coincidences, double entendre and intriguing pairs. These beautiful relics from the late industrial age were found hidden from view on one of my long walks through the neighborhood I lived in-- and not far from my studio on Overton street. Finding them basking in the late summer evening light I felt like I'd hit pay dirt or thrown snake eyes-- the roll of the dice in this case had led me to find a one of a kind pair at just right moment. The 16x24 Inch print faithfully captures the panorama of the ascending steps along the historic Old Oregon Trail on the slopes of Mt. Hood. The breathtaking view offers a natural "picture window" panorama allowing the eye to explore the vertical landscape from near focus to infinity... all in a distortionless natural perspective. According to a an official state marker... "The Pioneer Road here detoured the Columbia River Rapids and Mt. Hood to the Willamette Valley. The road at first followed an old indian trail. The later name was Barlow Road. Early travelers named the hill from the resemblance of native leaves to Laurel."

A rare look at the Oregon Cascades in the afterglow of sunset with rays of light shooting out from the hidden sun now just beneath the mountaintops. Under these fleeting atmospheric conditions, colors not ordinarily seen become visible offering a brilliant saturated color palette. Captured on August 14, 2007 in a remote area off Pine Mountain east of Bend, the ethereal image is a study in form and color with strong compositional framing to give emphasis to the dazzling sky, anchored by the Cascades here shown in silhouette. Bear Grass Colony Oregon Cascades Crest
I came upon this colony of Bear Grass in the High Cascades Lakes region... while making a photographic trek on the Cascade Crest. The last glimmers of daylight fell upon the colony which had otherwise been in deep shadow. As dusk approached it made for a most intimate view as the Bear Grass "floated" above the floor of the forest "dancing" in a brilliant, saturated, yet subdued light.

Belknap Crater, Drenched in Fog, Clyde Keller photo
Drenched in Fog Wide-Field Panorama, Belknap Crater Oregon High Cascades This exquisite Wide-Field Panoramic Landscape captures a northerly vista of the dramatic basaltic High Cascades Plateau lava flows found near the Dee Wright Observatory withinside the Belknap Crater Region. Print is imbued with a wide range color gamut capturing the atmosphere and dramatic scale of this recent 1,500 year old lava flow.
The photograph was taken June 29, 2007 inside the Belknap Crater region. A telephoto Nikkor lens was employed to capture the 32x10 degree sweep, atmosphere and stark contrast of the rough, jagged "clinkery" surface of the basaltic lava flows. The panorama was made facing intermittent 20 mph wind gusts and drizzle, both a technical challenge. Note the wild flowers shown far left and the atmospheric effects of the inclement weather. The violence and huge scale of the basaltic flow is shown to impressive effect by the use of panoramic technique. 16x24 Inch archival B&W giclee print Image dimensions are @10x22 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border

Belknap Crater, Oregon, Wild Side Walk, Clyde Keller Photo
Wild Side Walk Belknap Crater, Oregon Cascades
Belknap Crater is a rugged, awe inspiring and mystical place on top of our local world here in Central Oregon. This August 1999 image of the "rough, jagged clinkery surface" was caused by the rapid cooling process from the last recent eruption. Such drama takes your breath away. Belknap is a region that defies the old cliche... "once you've seen it, you've seen it all." One cannot help but be impressed by the vast scale of volcanism. This fisheye image captures my first impression of this foreboding landscape. It just strikes you as something quite alien and it's everywhere around you... it simply cannot be ignored.

Belknap Crater, Survivor in the Fog, Clyde Keller Photo
Survivor in the Fog Belknap Crater, Oregon Cascades August 1999 Belknap Crater is a mystical place on top of our local world here in Central Oregon where weather and light constantly change to delight the eye. This August 1999 image of the lone tree in the foreground continues to attract. Like the place itself I return to this print with its own special magic firmly grounded in the realism of a moment found and experienced. Belknap is a region that defies the old cliche... "once you've seen it, you've seen it all." It is inspiring and nurturing for the imagination... it is a sanctuary away from the more mundane and calculated workaday world. True, the "rough, jagged clinkery surface" is at the same time foreboding. This is an alien like landscape which cannot be ignored.

Belknap Crater, Windy Point Wildflowers, Clyde Keller Photo
Windy Point Wildflowers Belknap Crater Region, Oregon High Cascades Wide Field Panorama
This wide-field panorama captures a sweeping yet intimate view of wildflowers nestled in amongst rocks overlooking a westerly vista of the dramatic High Cascade basaltic lava flows found within the Belknap Crater region, near Sisters, Oregon. Photographed from Windy Point at the 4,909 foot level on a very turbulent, blustery and rainy day. The landscape is characterized by a rough, jagged "clinkery" surface caused by a rapid cooling process on the surface. This is a composite image combining many different techniques into one image.
In all of this is an implicit understanding of psychology... of giving the mind something to play with in the midst of a geology of violence. It is an awareness of the struggle for life to survive in an adverse environment, and it is in that structure upon which, we as human beings, wish to find purpose.

Bizarre Tumbleweed, Oregon oddity, Clyde Keller photo
Bizarre Tumbleweed Found on Dodds road, rural Deschutes County, Oregon New Years Day, 2009
After being snow bound for the the last two weeks the weather finally changed. From minus 5 into the 40s, stormy clouds provided torrential downpours and the accumulated snow was washed away in one night. Now the winds blew at gale force... and we, well, we just has to get out of our berg and go on a photo expedition. The sun was intermittent and the tumbleweeds, common to our high desert surroundings, rolled across the landscape and often traversed our road as we made our way into the rural hinterlands of Central Oregon. They appeared to be attacking our car... so we played dodgeball with them. But, when we came across this accumulation of tumbleweeds heaped into a pile... still advancing along the road... we made a stop to enjoy the "pictorial" quality of the bizarre obstruction. Like the 1950s science fiction "The Blob" this alien like conglomeration sent us into our own "outer limits."

Canoe at Lava Lake Central Oregon High Cascades Lakes Region
Here is an intimate view of a beautiful docked Canoe captured dockside at the Oregon High Cascades Lava Lake Shoreline on October 18, 2003. This was a beautiful late afternoon scene made during one of the glorious Indian Summer days in this High Cascades volcanic region. A moderately wide lens was employed to capture the beauty of the docked canoe, reflections and late afternoon light. In the background is the shoreline and meadow surrounding Lava Lake, sometimes cited as one of the crown jewels of this High Cascades lake region with 320 acres of excellent fishing for rainbow trout. It is located on the cascades lake Loop situated nearby Mt. Bachelor, South Sister and Broken Top.
