Oregon Coast Portfolio Oregon Coast Portfolio

Original Clyde Keller pictorial, landscape and iconic portraits of Coastal characters are presented together for the first time as beautiful fine art prints. Clyde began photographing the Oregon Coast as a teenager in the early 1960s. His Christmas Day Storm seascape from 1963 looks towards Cannon Beach as it was viewed from a trailhead at Ecola park. Other rarities include a colony of star fish entitled, "Starfish Island" as well as his 1968 series of Robert F. Kennedy imagery taken near the Peter Iredale wreck at Fort Stevens State Park. This is a personal collection reflecting Clyde's actual coastal experiences as he lived them.

Cannon Beach Storm
View from Ecola State Park, Christmas Day 1963

My Christmas Day storm photo has remained one of my personal favorites for nearly 48 years.  It was captured in the midst of blustery winds and incessant rain.  I had made a trek through the woods at the south end of Ecola Park from my grandmother's beach house.  Luckily, there was a lull as I emerged from the woods to capture a brief burst of distant sunlight breaking through the dense cloud cover.  Still, my lens had to be protected from the rain and the storm resumed less than a minute after I captured this memorable seascape.  Please enjoy... I've yet to see anything like this since!

Original Clyde Keller documentary photo
The Treasure Hunter
Lloyd Grimes cat operator
Neahkahnie Mountain, Oregon coast

1975 portrait captured in the midst of an authentic treasure hunt, high on the slopes of Neahkahnie Mountain overlooking the hamlet of Manzanita on the North Oregon Coast. The quest was to find the gold supposedly left by Spaniards 300 years ago (according to the legend) in the area where we had gathered. The dig site included an assortment of characters all of whom could scarcely trust each other... including an ex-felon just released from prison (as the story was told) with everyone toting guns and exhibiting a bravado that could only be matched by Lee Marvin in an adventure movie. Pictured is Lloyd Grimes one of the main protagonists, a Cat Operator, who told me on the eve of the dig that if I dared to divulge the whereabouts of the treasure site, that I'd be "sucking soup through a straw for six weeks." Needless to say... the famous Treasure of Manzanita has yet to be found. Photographed on the opening day of the treasure hunt when tensions rose to the boiling point. It was obvious by their behavior... no one was to be trusted! The look on Grimes face says it all... one of our favorite photojournalist portraits from the past.

I came upon this photograph of Kelp in pursuit of pictorial subjects that are very much part of the romance of the Oregon Coast.   My archival color giclee print offers an exquisite range of tone, depth and brilliancy... faithfully capturing this sea life subject.   Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

Made from the original 35mm Kodachrome transparency, fully restored color captures the magnificent kelp as it was found on a lovely September afternoon while exploring Simpson State Park with my Nikon film camera.

Ancient Sitka Ghost Tree
1,700 Years old, partially petrified
From a subduction earthquake, Neskowin, Oregon coast

These are the remains of a Sitka forest once standing along the Oregon Coastline at Neskowin, partially petrified and nearly 1,700 years old. The trees were exposed for the first time (just recently) when the beach sand was not replaced after winter storms, something that is new for this coastline and may be the result of global warming. Now barnacles grow on them and they are beginning to decompose. The next quake is overdue, so please enjoy. This scene will vanish when it is subducted during the next quake.  Photographed on September 26, 2009.

This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of color, tone and brilliancy faithfully capturing this atmospheric subject.  Although the view is wide the perspective is natural inviting the eye to explore the scene in all of its glorious detail.  Makes a strong impression.  Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is shrink wrapped on foam core board) and ready for framing.

Cape Meares is one of the most accessible lighthouses on the Oregon Coast with a pristine (restored) lamp house as shown in this intimate interior view of the classic fresnel focusing lens. It was originally developed for lighthouses by the french physicist, Augustin-Jean Fresnel. This image looks straight up into the interior of the lamp house capturing reflections of the rugged Oregon coastline looking north. The lighthouse is located 10 miles west of Tillamook, Oregon on the north end of the beautiful (but dangerous) Three Capes Scenic Loop. Watch out for numerous potholes in both lanes. Image size is @22x11 on the larger sheet. Suitable for framing.

This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of color, tone and brilliancy faithfully capturing this romantic lighthouse subject. Makes a strong impression. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is shrink wrapped on foam core board) and ready for framing.

The Sky is the Limit
From 1978 Kodachrome
Coos Bay bridge, Oregon Coast, near North Bend

At the time this photograph was made, I lived a short distance from this magnificent viewpoint in the cozy hamlet of North Bend, Oregon. This can be a magical place with warmer winters (than the Willamette valley) and plenty of atmosphere. At night one could hear fog horns in the distance from across the bay against a backdrop of stillness... really quite enchanting.  The Coos Bay Bridge was designed by Conde B. McCullough (Oregon's master bridge builder of more than 200 historic bridges) utilizing a unique cantilever design constructed with curved upper and lower chords. Its 5,305 foot length was the longest of Oregon's highway system when built in 1936.

The Nehalem River is most enchanting, providing a world of romanticism-- its carved out rockery, deep basins and cascading waters flow over rocks unseen. There is a majesty in its primitive fury as it winds its way through forests to the Oregon Coast. Nothing can quite match its beauty; it is a sanctuary to return to and be renewed. In this impressionist image we see a nude dipping her leg into a deep still pond of river water. She is surrounded by magnificent rock formations and the fairy like magic of the romantic terrain. The archival giclee art print offers vivid light fast color, done in a watercolor technique with glowing edges perfect for a moonlit subjective quality.

Please enjoy!

Nehalem Meditation
On the North Fork of the Nehalem River

The  North Fork of the Nehalem River offered a respite from some of the hot summer days located not too far from our home in the hamlet of Manzanita. The solitary figure is actually a self portrait made with the use of a self timer and tripod... and a mad ten second dash to the center of the river for the pose. This image was captured on film over 37 years ago, but waited until recently to make this beautifully toned print.

Nehalem River Reflections
Oregon Coast Impressionism
June 1975 on the North Fork of the Nehalem River

My impressionist rendering captures Nehalem River reflections as found about 12 miles inland from the hamlet of Nehalem on the Northwest Oregon Coast.  The image possesses a wide color palette embracing river, forest and sky. The reflections shimmer from the refraction of light as it plays upon still and rippled waters on this magnificent summer morning taken 35 years ago. Made from the original 35mm chrome transparency.
The camera used was a Nikon F film camera equipped with a 300mm Nikkor and favored for its ability to dramatically compress compositional elements.

At the time this photograph was made, I lived a short distance from this dramatic viewpoint in the cozy hamlet of North Bend, Oregon. The Union Pacific Locomotive was captured with a 500mm tele lens framed as it left the trestle. You can see the engineers in the cab-- this is a beautifully detailed image.

Adjacent to the trestle is the famous Coos Bay Bridge designed by Conde B. McCullough (Oregon's master bridge builder of more than 200 historic bridges) utilizing a unique cantilever design constructed with curved upper and lower chords. Old Rusty at the Manzanita City Dump
Oregon coast fog, circa 1972

In the early 1970s I lived in the quaint coastal hamlet of Manzanita located on the North Oregon Coast. Some might cite Neakahnie Mountain, the long stretch of beach or the sand dunes as what they love about the area, but I'd have to give the nod to the old Manzanita city dump. It wasn't just a landfill, it was an amazing time capsule where antiques abounded that are now the stuff that internet auction sites are made of.

Manzanita Sand Dunes, Abandoned Sign

The photograph was taken of an older abandoned sign riddled by bullet holes and set against the backdrop of the sweep of sand dunes. Oregon Coast Seance is a surreal study in light and form inspired by the beautiful monolithic "haystack" rock found at Arch Cape on the Oregon Coast. The 1976 Kodachrome captures the unusual lighting from the sun on a beautiful afternoon in late May. The original was used as the source for this multiple mirror image rendering. The fine art print realization creates the feel of a Mandala which gives emphasis to the patterns caused by the unusual lighting and exquisite variation in coloration.

Portrait of the Thaxters

Old-timer sweethearts
Nehalem Country Hinterlands

In the Spring of 1973 I was nosing out interesting folk for possible photographs who lived in the rural hinterlands of the small coastal community of Nehalem on the Oregon Coast. The Thaxter's proved to be a delight, a retired elderly couple interested in gardening, wildflowers and herbs. They are shown standing by their primitive cottage (by the Nehalem river) during a lull in the drizzle, typical for coastal weather. It remains a favorite feature photograph and portrait. Years later, the charm of the Thaxter's fairytale continues to resonate, with its straightforward joyous simplicity.

Wonderful Civil Rights Era pictorial photograph of the Kennedy's dating from the May 1968 Oregon Primary Presidential Campaign. View includes Boby and Ethel Kennedy strolling with their pet dog, Freckles along the North Oregon Coastline near Astoria.  This image captures a "decisive moment" with the ensemble of children joining Bobby, Ethel and Freckles to make a definitive image. The full 35mm frame of the original Ektachrome transparency has been preserved for the making of this larger 16x20 inch archival (200 years +) print.

I used an advanced motorized Nikon F with an 85mm Nikkor lens, a personal favorite for pictorial or photojournalism photography. The moderate telephoto perspective lends a most natural pictorial perspective perfect for the brilliant semi overcast light. Kodak Ektachrome film was used for this historic study.

Robert was a living embodiment of his slain brother. He represents the resurrection of the promise that he and his brother embodied while in the White House. That restoration, after Dallas, took many forms: Civil Rights at home, Human Rights abroad and the end of Apartheid for all people. His message and charisma and his policies were understood as ending all of the cruel and artificial divisions allowing him to bring a process of healing between people.
