The photograph was taken of an abandoned sign riddled by bullet holes and set against the backdrop of the sweep of sand dunes. I was drawn into this austere landscape by the subtext of violence with the sign serving subjectively as visual metaphor for the savage turbulence of the era... still resonant 36 years later.

This storm photo has remained one of my personal favorites for nearly 46 years. It was captured in the midst of blustery winds and incessant rain. I had made a trek through the woods at the south end of Ecola Park from my grandmother's beach house. Luckily, there was a lull as I emerged from the woods to capture a brief burst of distant sunlight breaking through the dense cloud cover. Still, my lens had to be protected from the rain and the storm resumed less than a minute after I captured this memorable seascape. Please enjoy... I've yet to see anything like this since!

"VIEWS FROM CHAPMAN POINT"
In the late 1950s my grandparents moved to Cannon Beach, Oregon. As a young teenager it was easy to slip out their back door and escape through the woods into nearby Ecola State Park where I had access to trails, the headlands and the beach.

These are the remains of a Sitka forest once standing along the Oregon Coastline at Neskowin, partially petrified and nearly 1,700 years old. The trees were exposed for the first time (just recently) when the beach sand was not replaced after winter storms, something that is new for this coastline and may be the result of global warming. Now barnacles grow on them and they are beginning to decompose. The next quake is overdue, so please enjoy. This scene will vanish when it is subducted during the next quake. Photographed on September 26, 2009.

At the time this photograph was made, I lived a short distance from this magnificent viewpoint in the cozy hamlet of North Bend, Oregon. This can be a magical place with warmer winters (than the Willamette valley) and plenty of atmosphere. At night one could hear fog horns in the distance from across the bay against a backdrop of stillness... really quite enchanting. The Coos Bay Bridge was designed by Conde B. McCullough (Oregon's master bridge builder of more than 200 historic bridges) utilizing a unique cantilever design constructed with curved upper and lower chords. Its 5,305 foot length was the longest of Oregon's highway system when built in 1936.

1975 portrait captured in the midst of an authentic treasure hunt, high on the slopes of Neahkahnie Mountain overlooking the hamlet of Manzanita on the North Oregon Coast. The quest was to find the gold susposedly left by Spaniards 300 years ago (according to the legend) in the area where we had gathered. The dig site included an assortment of characters all of whom could scarcely trust each other... including an ex-felon just released from prison (as the story was told) with everyone toting guns and exhibiting a bravado that could only be matched by Lee Marvin in an adventure movie. Pictured is Lloyd Grimes one of the main protagonists, a Cat Operator, who told me on the eve of the dig that if I dared to divulge the whereabouts of the treasure site, that I'd be "sucking soup through a straw for six weeks." Needless to say... the famous Treasure of Manzanita has yet to be found. Photographed on the opening day of the treasure hunt when tensions rose to the boiling point. It was obvious by their behavior... no one was to be trusted! The look on Grimes face says it all... one of our favorite portraits from the past.

In the Spring of 1973 I was nosing out interesting folk for possible photographs who lived in the rural hinterlands of the small coastal community of Nehalem on the Oregon Coast. The Thaxter's proved to be a delight, a retired elderly couple interested in gardening, wildflowers and herbs. They are shown standing by their primitive cottage during a lull in the drizzle, typical for coastal weather. It remains a favorite feature photograph and portrait. Years later, the charm of the Thaxter's fairytale continues to resonate, with its straightforward joyous simplicity.

The North Fork of the Nehalem River offered a respite from some of the hot summer days located not too far from our home in the hamlet of Manzanita. The solitary figure is actually a self portrait made with the use of a self timer and tripod... and a mad ten second dash to the center of the river for the pose. This image was captured on film over 37 years ago, but waited until recently to make this beautifully toned print.
