Here are original Clyde Keller documentary photographs drawn from the rural areas of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.
Many of the photographs were published and are presented in this portfolio for the first time. Of particular note are the rural subjects who comprise the "Valley People" and "Skagit Spring" series, both publishing projects centering on the original pioneer families and survivors of the pioneers who first settled these regions. There's a good measure of Americana in this collection as well with colorful iconic characters who bring to life the lore, history and traditions of the Pacific NW peoples.

1965 documentary portrait, A LIFETIME TOGETHER, Clyde Keller photo

16x20 inch archival giclee art print Image dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border
Clear sleeved on foam core Shipped flat, insured with delivery confirmation
A LIFETIME TOGETHER depicts an older couple enjoying a summer day in their backyard. I made this photograph as a teenager while at a friend's house-- the view was captured of the older couple unobtrusively as they sat directly across the street in plain view. The scene was photographed in an older Portland neighborhood near Mt. Tabor. I never knew much about them or even met them. It was only years later when going through my earlier work that I rediscovered this image. I was impressed with it at the time and had made an 11x14 inch black and white print, but later retired it to storage.
Much has been made of the symbolism of the elderly couple spending time together in a natural idealistic setting. Its power apparently dwells within a romantic conceptualization and realization for a lifetime spent together. I cannot deny the public's enchantment with this enduring image. I can only postulate that its power is amplified in part by its mysterious nature. Like a gestalt we allow our inner yearnings to project beyond the mundane in our quest to find a deeper more fulfilled meaning towards life's uncertain journey.
The donut holes in the background are the result from the special 500mm telephoto lens in use, a limited production Nikkor telephoto that employed mirrors in place of glass elements. The effect adds to the mood complementing the woman's paisley pattern dress... this portrait has proven to be a favorite since it was taken, a moment observed over 47 years ago.
This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonal color, depth and brilliancy... faithfully capturing this poetic subject. Makes a strong impression. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

Original Clyde Keller Photo No Leaning Oregon State Fair Carney Summer 1966
This vintage 1966 documentary "street photograph" captures a carney at repose behind his booth at the Oregon State Fair. "No Leaning" was taken during a break from our summer workshop with W. Eugene Smith held at the University of Oregon. The original prints were the subject of critique by renowned photojournalist Smith. The camera used was a Nikon F with an ultrawide 21mm wide angle lens, perfect for working close and working wide.
Please note a series of three wonderful photos made by photographer Don Getsug can be viwed on the companion pint entitled "Mow Em Down." In the triptych I am shown in an exchange with Eugene Smith (we're looking at the Carnival images) captured during the 1966 Photo Seminar Workshop held at the University of Oregon. 1975 shoot, Lloyd Grimes, The Treasure Hunter, Clyde Keller photo
Original Clyde Keller documentary photo The Treasure Hunter Lloyd Grimes cat operator Neahkahnie Mountain, Oregon coast
1975 portrait captured in the midst of an authentic treasure hunt, high on the slopes of Neahkahnie Mountain overlooking the hamlet of Manzanita on the North Oregon Coast. The quest was to find the gold supposedly left by Spaniards 300 years ago (according to the legend) in the area where we had gathered. The dig site included an assortment of characters all of whom could scarcely trust each other... including an ex-felon just released from prison (as the story was told) with everyone toting guns and exhibiting a bravado that could only be matched by Lee Marvin in an adventure movie. Pictured is Lloyd Grimes one of the main protagonists, a Cat Operator, who told me on the eve of the dig that if I dared to divulge the whereabouts of the treasure site, that I'd be "sucking soup through a straw for six weeks." Needless to say... the famous Treasure of Manzanita has yet to be found. Photographed on the opening day of the treasure hunt when tensions rose to the boiling point. It was obvious by their behavior... no one was to be trusted! The look on Grimes face says it all... one of our favorite photojournalist portraits from the past.

1975, Pianist Barry Barnham, Double Struck, Clyde Keller photo
Double Struck Jazz pianist Barry Barnham At the now defunct Pretty Boy Floyds, Portland, Oregon
Original Clyde Keller documentary photo
In 1975 Pretty Boy Floyds was a tavern frequented by many of Portland's writers, artists and poets. The pianist captured here, Barry Barnham, with sleeves rolled up in a Hoagy Carmichael jazz kind of way... gave in an impromptu performance that electrified the room... that went particularly well with the burgers and beer served by the tavern. Of course the establishment is long gone, and so this photograph is a personal remembrance for a place, an era and a time that served as a melting pot for some of Portland's finest, circa 1975.

16x20 Inch Art Print Image Dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border Clear Sleeved on foam core Shipped flat, insured with delivery confirmation
Photographed in July of 1977 and part of a popular regional photographic calendar entitled "Valley People." The documentary project concerned documenting descendants of the Tuality Plains settlers of Washington County, Oregon.
Pictured is pioneer desendent Oliver Van Domelin with his horse drawn plow, on his Mountaindale Farm taken 32 years ago. Oliver is representative of the valley's pioneer heritage... and the last of a then living pioneer. Photographed in July of 1977 and part of a popular photographic calendar entitled "Valley People."
Of particular note is the fact that Oliver didn't wait for me as I was in the middle of changing rolls of film on my 35mm Nikon camera. So... what is observed in this photograph is that I am actually running to catch up with him as the horses made their way out into the field. I relied on a fast shutter speed and an "eagle eye" to capture this image while both of us were in full motion. A favorite for many years, this image captures the lively feel. It is an authentic document of an era no longer with us.

Here is a splendid view of a most popular, cold-hardy backyard chicken, the handsome Buff Orpington Cock, shown here perched on a basaltic lava rock surveying his domain-- telling of the austere high desert terrain of Central Oregon.
Customer Feedback & Commentary:
"Buff Orpingtons are extremely gentle for backyard chicken fans. They're inquisitive and friendly. We have an Orpington rooster that was recently attacked and carried off by a stray dog after defending his flock. He fought his way free from the dog and came back home injured but as gentle as ever. One can learn a lot from an Orpington, if one tries." Ken Bilderback
One of my faves... especially since I now have hens of my own. Rebecca Dresser
I am an ardent fan-- do visit his shop and follow his hourney though his special and exciting Photo Odyssey. - Vicki Diane
"I love this picture Clyde. Had chicken when I lived in Santa Fe, NM." - Iris Karina

Birgetta Nixon's Kittens, Cherry Grove folk, Clyde Keller photo
Birgetta Nixon's Kittens Valley People Documentary Project Cherry Grove, Oregon
Photographed in September of 1977 and part of a popular regional photographic calendar entitled "Valley People." The documentary project concerned documenting descendants of the historic Tuality Plains settlers of Washington County, Oregon.
Shown are Birgetta Nixon and her grand-daughter with kittens near Cherry Grove -- taken over 34 years ago. The figures are representative of the last of a then living heritage. Birgetta was well known as the local historian... keeping track of Cherry Grove's Lore in her scrapbooks including several published books on its history.
One of my favorite images from the 1978 Valley People Calendar... and one of my favorite subjects and friend. In this impromptu photo we had just come out of her house (where we had just looked at some of her scrap books) and were greeted by her grand-daughter. Soon we were in a mad camp romp as Birgetta raced to gather nearby kitty cats for a "portrait" of herself and her grand-daughter. Old tools, buckets, nick knacks and farm irons can be seen on the side of her house in the background. Visiting with her was always free spirited... filled with an atmosphere of the unusual, the unexpected delight.

Seated in his one room Mountaindale Cabin is old-timerChet, a reclusive hermit, here shown lighting his pipe. I photographed him in February of 1974 as part of the documentary project. Although shy, Chet was most accommodating when I asked him if he would let me photograph him. I asked Chet to act as if I wasn't there. The resulting portraits were both naturalistic and telling of a more simplified and harsher rural life. Looking at Chet by the window (his only source of lighting) I was reminded of Roy Stryker's WPA (Farm Security Administration) efforts from the 1930s depression. In these rural hinter lands, some people lived in an absence of electricity with wood as the only source of heat. These images are from a collection that reveal the impact poverty has upon the lives of those who share its face
