Anne Waldman Recital
Poetry Reading, McArthur Court
Ken Kesey Poetical Hoo-Haw, Recital

My kinetic image of Anne Walman, a most "fervent activist for social change" captures her on stage in an electrifying performance. Held at the University of Oregon's McArthur Park she held the audience spell bound. She is the founder of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University  where she remains a Distinguished Professor of Poetics and the Director of Naropa's famous Summer Writing Program.

An evening concert took place at the University of Oregon's McArthur Court where such luminaries as Wiliam Burroughs, Walt Curtis, Anne Waldman gave recitals. The party at the Barn Home attracted both local Oregon Poets such as Marty Christiansen, Walt Curtis and other notables such at Ken Babbs and Mark Christensen. Ken Kesey Bash - Poetical Hoo-Haw
June 9, 1976

My documentary photo depicts some of the many participants who responded to Ken Kesey's invocations he made while on the stage built for the Poetic Hoo-Haw. Upfront is Sheila who was often seen with Gary Ewing who is shown dancing directly behind her.  Gary was well known in Portland, Oregon where he operated Crystal Ballroom. His fantastic Haight Ashbury style Psychedelic Light Shows  accompanied the bands who played there for several decades.

Psychedelic Turn On
Turn On - Tune In - Drop Out
Timothy Leary Interpretive Art Print

Here is my homage to the king of LSD from my original negatives. In 1967 Leary made waves across the United States with his use of psychedelic drugs. During his speech (at Portland State) he kept everyone guessing as to whether or not the "colorless and oderless" liquid he drank before a thousand or so students at the College Center was the real deal. My art print rekindles the psychedelic flavor of the times. The original black and white film was converted to a high contrast lith (some years back) and just revisited in an inventive interpretation, born anew.  Please note that the typography surrounding the image is for display and the fine art print features by signature. Please note that this image is included in the Ken Kesey Section as it pertains to "LSD and The Politics of Ecstasy" in Mark Christensen's book on Ken Kesey entitled,  "Acid Christ." As of February 2011 it is headed towards multiple printings with a PB forthcoming - Fall 2011.

About my portraits: Timothy Leary spoke at Portland State College in 1967. After his appearance I found him sitting alone in a smaller annex room reserved for teachers eating lunch. I approached him with my motorized Nikon in hand and sat down to join him at his table. We started talking and I commenced to "blow" a roll of 35mm film while we made conversation. In this sequence Leary is reacting to my photographing him- just like someone might do alone in and old fashioned photomat parlor- cruising from one inventive pose change to another.

June 9, 1976

Pictured is Walt Curtis, a poet of considerable talent and a continuing force in the Oregon Arts Community.
In this triptych Walt is shown as he appeared in a series of three photographs reading his poetry at the Poetical Hoo-Haw held at McArthur Park.  Sometimes known as Oregon's "Unofficial Poet Laureate" he is the author of the popular 1977 novel, "Mala Noche" (Bad Night) later made into a motion picture by Gus Van Sant.  An authentic, beloved talent... with a genuine "cult following" he is shown here in his prime, shortly before finishing his novel, previously cited.

This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tone and brilliancy faithfully capturing this important figure in American Literature.  In this photo Ken Kesey is shown launching his Poetical Hoo-Haw with two cohorts before an assembled crowd of several hundred enthusiasts who proceeded to break out into a celebratory dance.  The print offers considerable graphic depth augmented by cool and warm gray quadtones in the best tradition of black and white fine art printing. The B&W negative from which this print is made is in pristine condition with little if any deterioration. Makes a strong impression with excellent scale at this larger size. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is clear sleeved on foam core board) and ready for framing.

"The year was 1976. I was going to visit Kesey with my pal photographer Clyde Keller. Clyde was unique... Keller created what Kesey liked best: art made magic. I never met anybody who could compress creativity into such a vital, efficient package. Clyde’s camera was a silent machine gun, he shot photos like movie directors shot film and we were soon to be off to record “Kesey World” for posterity."   Text by Mark Christensen, author of ACID CHRIST.

Beautifully detailed 180mm available light portrait made of literary giant, William Burroughs at the Kesey Poetical Hoo-Haw. Photographed during his evening performance at McArthur Park. Please view the vertical portrait made of him concurrently as well as my informal portrait of him, made earlier in the afternoon, with Portland Poet, Marty Christiansen.

My archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of cool and warm gray quadtones illuminating William Burroughs as he appeared during his recital. The B&W negative from which this print is made is in pristine condition with little if any deterioration. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is clear sleeved on foam core board) and ready for framing.

Ken Kesey, LSD and the Politics of Ecstasy

“Mark Christensen with Acid Christ has brought Ken Kesey to vibrant life—provocative, colorful, engaging and personal. What a pleasure to have a front-row seat into the mind of such a counter-culture icon.”  —CHUCK PALAHNIUK, bestselling author, FIGHT CLUB and TELL ALL

“Contains not only interesting stuff I didn’t know about Kesey, but other information about the era—what led up to and followed it…[It] will prove to be the most amusing history book you’ve ever read!” —GRACE SLICK

Part of a collection of photographs taken at the Ken Kesey Poetic Hoo-Haw Arts Festival held at Kesey's Barn Home near Pleasant Hill (Eugene, Oregon) during the day. Celebrities such as William Burroughs, Paul Krassner and a then unknown Bill Murray attended as well.
