Doubles Series
Unique collection of Clyde Keller photo art prints which have a dual edged meaning or visual paradox. Clyde has drawn from a variety of film and digital source material spanning nearly 45 years. It is a journey into a creative world where satire, concurrent coincidences, double entendre and intriguing pairs happily inhabit the same space. The Doubles Portfolio reflects upon Clyde's penchant for the unusual circumstance and as a found art relying on his documentary background and love for the reportage approach-- or as moments unobtrusively observed.

1965 documentary portrait, A LIFETIME TOGETHER, Clyde Keller photo

16x20 inch archival giclee art print Image dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border

A LIFETIME TOGETHER depicts an older couple enjoying a summer day in their backyard. I made this photograph as a teenager while at a friend's house-- the view was captured of the older couple unobtrusively as they sat directly across the street in plain view. The scene was photographed in an older Portland neighborhood near Mt. Tabor. I never knew much about them or even met them. It was only years later when going through my earlier work that I rediscovered this image. I was impressed with it at the time and had made an 11x14 inch black and white print, but later retired it to storage.
Much has been made of the symbolism of the elderly couple spending time together in a natural idealistic setting. Its power apparently dwells within a romantic conceptualization and realization for a lifetime spent together. I cannot deny the public's enchantment with this enduring image. I can only postulate that its power is amplified in part by its mysterious nature. Like a gestalt we allow our inner yearnings to project beyond the mundane in our quest to find a deeper more fulfilled meaning towards life's uncertain journey.
The donut holes in the background are the result from the special 500mm telephoto lens in use, a limited production Nikkor telephoto that employed mirrors in place of glass elements. The effect adds to the mood complementing the woman's paisley pattern dress... this portrait has proven to be a favorite since it was taken, a moment observed over 47 years ago.
This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonal color, depth and brilliancy... faithfully capturing this poetic subject. Makes a strong impression. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

1966 portrait of carney hustler, Mow Em Down, Clyde Keller photo
Original documentary Clyde Keller photo Mow Em Down Carnival Carney Hustler Oregon State Fair Summer 1966
This vintage 1966 documentary street photograph captures a carnival hustler at the Oregon State Fair. I made the photograph during a break from our summer workshop with W. The camera used was a Nikon F with an ultrawide 21mm wide angle lens, perfect for working close and working wide.
Please note the series of three wonderful photos made by photographer Don Getsug. 1966 psychedelic scene, Can Be Flying, Clyde Keller Photo
Original Clyde Keller photo Can Be Flying Strange days ahead Portland, Oregon
From my psychedelic hippie film archive (Including the Ken Kesey Collection)
The documentary street scene image was my first real encounter with what was to become the Hippie or Psychedelic Culture. The central figure caught my eye with his assorted adornments, rounded spectacles, knives and beaded boots. Dissent against the Vietnam War was growing in a climate where drug experimentation almost became the norm. This image captures the strange atmosphere that prevailed during this time where counter cultural expression reached a dramatic turning point leading to the questioning of our institutions, lifestyle and hegemony.

1968 Warren Beatty, Dark Eyes, Clyde Keller photo
Original Clyde Keller photo Warren Beatty portrait Dark Eyes
Featured as the cover photo on a new book entitled, "Star" about actor and movie director Warren Beatty. Authored by Peter Biskind and published by Simon and Schuster this popular 640 page biography continues to be available since its 2010 debut.
In this vintage documentary arts portrait, I captured Warren Beatty on the sidewalks of Portland adjacent to the Benson Hotel. I asked for this pose (hand on chin) with and without his wearing sun glasses. This image combines both poses so that his eyes become visible through his dark sun glasses. Since we both stood our ground this became technically feasable making for a most unusual portrait. I used a Nikon F film camera, loaded with Kodak Tri-X and equipped with a 55mm Nikkor lens. The negatives are pristine producing a sharp looking print!

1968, The Living Theatre, Julian Beck, Clyde Keller photo
Original Clyde Keller photo The Living Theatre Portrait of Julian Beck and participants Reed College, 1968
Avant Garde time lapse portrait of Julian Beck in a performance by The Living Theatre (founder) in 1968 at Reed College, in Portland, Oregon. The capture was created during a final performance by The Living Theatre; Julian Beck is shown surrounded by his troupe and the audience. The layered effect is achieved through successive multiple exposures to highlight the spectacle... whose aim was to present theatre designed to "dissolve complacency in the audience in all endeavors." The print captures the process of dissolving the barriers between troupe and audience; it was made directly from the original negative... what is seen is as actually captured. It is Signed and Dated. Beck, an anarchist, left the United States with his troupe in 1968, reportedly to avoid pressing income tax problems. They continued to work in Europe and later Brazil. Beck died of cancer in 1985.

1971, Nixon Air Force One, Defiance, Clyde Keller photo
Original Clyde Keller documentary photo Defiance Air Force One reception for President Richard M. Nixon Shown in this vintage documentary image is a reception in progress as Richard and Pat Nixon had just arrived at the Portland International Airport in 1971. The youth shown center stage paradoxically moved away from the jet (with a seeming manor of defiance) just as the Nixons were about to greet those who had come to receive them. Using a 24mm wide angle Nikkor lens this impromptu portrait was made "on the fly" as I was making my way toward the jet plane. Behind the young figure, looming in the background is Air Force One. The composition frames both the figure, crowd and jet into a telling story or mood set against the continuing backdrop of the Vietnam War.

1975 Oregon Symphony, Lawrence Leighton Smith, Clyde Keller photo
Original portrait by Clyde Keller Lawrence Leighton Smith Encore performance, Oregon Symphony Portland, Oregon, 1975 This vintage 1975 portrait of symphony conductor and pianist Lawrence Leighton Smith (born April 8, 1936) was captured at the conclusion of an encore performance by the Oregon Symphony. Originally published in a local Portland magazine (One Dollar, edited by James Kiehl) the image proved so popular as to be used extensively (several million impressions reported) by the Oregon Symphony in their promotions for the following year. Lawrence Smith served as music director of the Oregon Symphony between 1973-1980. As a guest conductor he has been associated with domestic and international orchestras. Here in Oregon he served as the music director of the Sunriver Music Festival for over 17 seasons. According to Wikipedia his recordings include “The Moscow Sessions” for Sheffield Lab (for which he became the first American born conductor to conduct the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986). Sheffield lab is well established as one of the first audiophile labels to perfect the analog recording process during the digital era. As a pianist Wikipedia lists these artists he has accompanied: Franco Corelli, Sherrill Milnes, Zara Nelsova, Ruggiero Ricci, Jennie Tourel, Renata Tebaldi, Walter Trampler, and Pinchas Zukerman.

1975 photo, Atomic Reactor Core, Trojan Plant, Clyde Keller art print
Original Clyde Keller photo art print Atomic Reactor Core Trojan Nuclear Power Plant Columbia River near Portland, Oregon
Interpretive art print based upon 1975 photograph
The Trojan Nuclear Power Plant was a pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant located near Rainier, Oregon. Here is an imaginative view and rendering of the heart of the controversial reactor core gleaming with its nuclear class rod travel housings and exotic metallurgy. To see it in the flesh was most impressive as it strangely resembled a high tech pipe organ. My vantage point looks up at the reactor core from the floor of the pressurized containment vessel, a rare view indeed. The image was captured before the plant opened in October 1975. It operated for 16 years before it was shut down in 1993. Of note is that the cost of construction and subsequent demolition cost nearly a billion dollars in total. Its history was fraught with technical problems and safety concerns. The Trojan Decommissioning Alliance, founded by Lloyd Marbet, led the environmental opposition staging protests. Ballot measures calling for the plant's closure were defeated in 1980, 1986, 1990 and 1992 but with PGE plant operators committing to earlier retirement than the estimated 30 years lifespan or in early 2011.

1975 Ray Lampkin boxing championship, Knockout, Clyde Keller Photo
Original Clyde Keller documentary photo Knockout Ray Lampkin Retains NABF lightweight title 1st round knockout, Mike Ryan Portland, Oregon February 6, 1975
In this photo of a 1st Round Knockout, an ironic twist is added to the fate of Ray Lampkin's opponent, Mike Ryan, who is shown unconscious while Ray hugs his manager, Mike Morton. This has remained one of my favorite photojournalist photos, and was achieved by perching myself on top of the ropes for an all inclusive elevated, corner view of the ring. Photographed with a moderate 24mm Nikkor wide angle lens using Tri-X, a perfect combination to capture the event.

1975 shoot, Lloyd Grimes, The Treasure Hunter, Clyde Keller photo
Original Clyde Keller documentary photo The Treasure Hunter Lloyd Grimes cat operator Neahkahnie Mountain, Oregon coast
1975 portrait captured in the midst of an authentic treasure hunt, high on the slopes of Neahkahnie Mountain overlooking the hamlet of Manzanita on the North Oregon Coast. The quest was to find the gold supposedly left by Spaniards 300 years ago (according to the legend) in the area where we had gathered. The dig site included an assortment of characters all of whom could scarcely trust each other... including an ex-felon just released from prison (as the story was told) with everyone toting guns and exhibiting a bravado that could only be matched by Lee Marvin in an adventure movie. Pictured is Lloyd Grimes one of the main protagonists, a Cat Operator, who told me on the eve of the dig that if I dared to divulge the whereabouts of the treasure site, that I'd be "sucking soup through a straw for six weeks." Needless to say... the famous Treasure of Manzanita has yet to be found. Photographed on the opening day of the treasure hunt when tensions rose to the boiling point. It was obvious by their behavior... no one was to be trusted! The look on Grimes face says it all... one of our favorite photojournalist portraits from the past.

1975, Louie Demott Bunce, The Stolen Kiss, Clyde Keller Photo
The Stolen Kiss Louis Demott Bunce (1907-1983) Portrait of the Artist, Summer 1975 Portland Tavern, Late Nite
This impromptu portrait of Louie Bunce (famed NW abstract expressionist/surrealist painter) was taken late night at a tavern in NW Portland where local painters (including Jackie Johnson) had gathered. The pose resulted from a "stolen kiss" from Jackie, a fait accompli and a moment savored by Louie in his moment of triumph. One of my favorite "bar portraits" here presented of this great artist in a beautiful giclee rendering.

1975, Pianist Barry Barnham, Double Struck, Clyde Keller photo
Double Struck Jazz pianist Barry Barnham At the now defunct Pretty Boy Floyds, Portland, Oregon
Original Clyde Keller documentary photo
In 1975 Pretty Boy Floyds was a tavern frequented by many of Portland's writers, artists and poets. The pianist captured here, Barry Barnham, with sleeves rolled up in a Hoagy Carmichael jazz kind of way... gave in an impromptu performance that electrified the room... that went particularly well with the burgers and beer served by the tavern. Of course the establishment is long gone, and so this photograph is a personal remembrance for a place, an era and a time that served as a melting pot for some of Portland's finest, circa 1975.

Pictured in relief are participants in a performance arts dramatization of support for Cuba and to "Break The Blockade" against this country's trade and economic embargo against them. The protest against the embargo directed at Cuba was designed to end the strangulation of the Cuban economy by multinational corporate and banking interests that wanted to end the socialist experiment. My new Art Print commemorates the continued protest that is supported by a majority of countries throughout the world to end the embargo. The concert (held in 1976 at the old Academy of Music in NYC) was electrifying and my first exposure to the poetry of feminist political activist, June Jordan. The concert included June's recital from her 1972 work, "Poems of Exile and Return." Included in this small portfolio are images drawn from the concert including music and theatrical expressions against US Imperialism. The staged event memorializes this protest (which banners boldly declared as a blockade) and sent a message for ending the needless cruelty against Cuba which endures to this day nearly 35 years later.
On the day President John F. Kennedy died a personal representative had been directed to meet with Castro about the possibility of normalizing the relationship between Cuba and the United States. With Kennedy's death the hope for the normalization of relations between the two countries died. Castro has publicly stated in a recent interview that if President John F. Kennedy had not been assassinated, there was no question but that relations between Cuba and the United States would have probably improved. Instead, the economic embargo has continued for decades. Kennedy's views challenged the status-quo of the Washington D.C. power brokers by calling for more peaceful forms of cooperation with the Soviet Union and its allies. Kennedy stood for curtailing the devastating influence of U.S. hegemony toward the third world. He was sympathetic to nationalistic movements throughout the third world because he understood the anti-colonial sentiments of the peoples of Africa, Latin America and Asia. Now, 34+ years later this photograph still dramatizes the continued frustration many have throughout the world with the imperial aspects of American Foreign Policy.

Uncle Sam Protest In Concert With Cuba, Break The Blockade (Economic Trade Embargo) July 24, 1976 NYC, Academy of Music Concert Hall Stage Performance Documentary Photograph by Clyde keller
In this documentary arts image Uncle Sam is classically posed riding atop the backs of workers in a double entendre illustrating the exploitative effects of the American Empire upon the impoverished Third World. Its biting satire brutalizes the symbolism of the American icon inverting its intended meaning in a protest against Cold War tactics. The staged event memorializes this protest and sent a message for ending the economic trade embargo against Cuba which endures to this day nearly 35 years later.

Part of a collection of photographs taken during and near the time of the 1976 New York Democratic Convention when I spent several months in NYC. 1976 double take, Abe Lincoln with Nude, Clyde Keller photo
Double take: Abe Lincoln with Nude Kansas City, 1976 Republican Convention
Part of a collection of photographs taken during and near the time of the 1976 Republican Convention held in Kansas City. The character of Abe Lincoln added color to the Convention, and he is captured here with shopping bag, waving an American Flag. The nude was photographed in my studio and the two images were combined for a surreal "double take" of unlikely subjects inhabiting an otherwise ordinary street scene. The visual paradox is augmented by the juxtaposition of the nude receding into the darkness of the shopping window as the figure in costume advances towards us. In the middle of this madcap visual mayhem we are presented with a dash of patriotic zeal for all things free spirited.

1976 NYC, Shirley Chisholm Speech, vintage Clyde Keller photo
Shirley Chisholm Speech Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005) New York City, July 1976
I photographed Shirley Chisholm in New York as part of my photojournalism documentary coverage of the 1976 Democratic Convention which led to the nomination of Jimmy Carter. She appeared outdoors near Madison Square Garden with an entourage of supporters speaking out for civil rights and womens rights movement issues including gay rights issues that are now embodied in the platform by the National Organization for Women
Chisholm is an important figure in American history well known for her activism for the advancement of women's issues, civil and human rights issues and for concerns for the poor. She was a Congresswoman, representing New York's 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1968, she became the first black woman elected to Congress.[ 16x20 Inch Art Print Image Dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border Clear Sleeved on foam core Shipped flat, insured with delivery confirmation Shirley Chisholm Speech Copyright © 1976 Clyde Keller

Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (1908-1979) was the 41st Vice President of the United States under Gerald Ford's Administration. The camera I used for all of the Republican Convention photographs were Motorized Nikons with Nikkor Lenses. 1977 documentary portrait, Wino in the Bush, Clyde Keller photo art print
Wino in the Bush Vintage 1977 documentary portrait Downtown Portland, Oregon
The portrait of a wino was taken as part of a photo documentary project included for viewing at a national conference held in Portland, Oregon, entitled Wages, Welfare Or What? The show highlighted some of the issues under discussion as it related to full employment, health care and poverty. At the time of the conference, the Humphrey Hawkins Bill, sponsored in part by former Vice president, Hubert Humphrey, was under intense discussion.
The subject shown in this documentary photograph figured in the larger conversation concerning displaced local residents who were forced to vacate to make way for the construction of a parking lot in downtown Portland, Oregon. Tragically, elderly citizens who lived in hotels on the block were forced to move... and sadly one of the great movie houses from the silent era, The Blue Mouse, was torn down. I found this person where he is shown with his bottle with really no where to go. Behind him, looming in the background are the newer buildings of the downtown skyline.
