"The year was 1976. I was going to visit Kesey with my pal photographer Clyde Keller. Clyde was unique... Keller created what Kesey liked best: art made magic. I never met anybody who could compress creativity into such a vital, efficient package. Clyde’s camera was a silent machine gun, he shot photos like movie directors shot film and we were soon to be off to record “Kesey World” for posterity." Text by Mark Christensen, author of ACID CHRIST.
Beautifully detailed 180mm available light portrait made of literary giant, William Burroughs at the Kesey Poetical Hoo-Haw. Photographed during his evening performance at McArthur Park. Please view the vertical portrait made of him concurrently as well as my informal portrait of him, made earlier in the afternoon, with Portland Poet, Marty Christiansen. My archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of cool and warm gray quadtones illuminating William Burroughs as he appeared during his recital. Lee Brown of Haro Street, Vancouver BC native, Clyde Keller photo
Lee Brown of Haro Street Vancouver BC native old-timer Alleyway portrait, Vancouver BC, Canada
Here is an impromptu portrait of one of the "old-timers" of the Haro Street Community, Lee Brown, as caught on one of his daily walks surveying the grounds around his three story apartment complex which he manages. We were parking our car in the alley behind the Buchan Hotel when Lee emerged to greet us. Like many Canadians we have met, Lee is quite amiable and willing to share his love of Vancouver and its rich history. Haro Street has the rare quality of mixing residential area homes, apartments, hotels, gardens and parks into a seamless delightful whole. Part of a continuing series on Vancouver, British Columbia, celebrating its people, architecture and beauty.

MIGRANT CAMP CHILD, Back To The Future, Clyde Keller Photo
"MIGRANT CAMP CHILD" Ron's Upper Migrant Camp Washington County, Oregon June 1974
16x20 Inch Archival Giclee Print Image Dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Printed on Heavyweight Epson Satin Paper Signed/Dated on lower white border
Clear Sleeved on Foam Core, Corner Mounted Shipped Flat, Insured with Tracking
In this vintage documentary image I was focusing on poverty as it could be found throughout Washington County, Oregon. The subject of the solitary child gathering a can of water was photographed at one of the numerous farms (known as Ron's Upper) that employed migrant farm labor in the 1970s. Entire families lived in small one room plywood shelters with bunk beds without water, cooking or toilet facilities. According to Ron Tankersly, one of the owners I spoke with, these migrant laborers loved to "camp out" during the cucumber season. This photograph highlights the actual living conditions such as I found them in June of 1974.
In this new era of foreclosures, unemployment and resulting poverty, this haunting image serves as a sobering reminder that adverse economic conditions have been with us all along. It is what Arianna Huffington now describes as an emerging "Third World America." Like the movie, "Back To The Future" the past has become present but in a downward spiral of increasing poverty.
It is what prompted the late Oregon U.S. Senator Wayne Morse (after viewing these photos in 1974) to argue for a continuing need to address human rights and to be "our brothers keeper" on behalf of the disadvantaged.
In an affluent society these concerns have far too often been ignored during better times. But, as this child reminds us, we are in the stream of a history where such hardships are never further away than in an economic downturn or now, in a "recovery" where millions live under the threat of losing their homes or becoming homeless.
I would like to mention the work done by photographers during the Great Depression, especially under the direction of Roy Stryker's Farm Security Administration or FSA. When we think of the images which defined that era, the work done by such greats as Dorthea Lange and Walker Evans come to mind. I traveled to the Library of Congress in 1976 (two years after this image was taken) to look at the wealth of images that came from the work of the FSA and was profoundly impressed by the variety and scope of these important documentary images. Sadly, this effort was to never be recreated. In this country we never have had the equivalent of the Canadian Film Board whose efforts have supported contemporary documentary and publishing projects similar to the efforts made by these great artists during the Depression. Nonetheless without the work of such gifted artists as Dorthea Lange, we would not have an interpretive photographic record that put a human face on those who struggled sometimes under very adverse conditions.
The B&W Negative used to make this print is in pristine condition with little if any deterioration. Makes a strong impression with excellent scale at this larger poster size. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is clear sleeved on foam core board) and ready for framing.

Native View, portrait of Stanley Park regular, Clyde Keller photo
Native View Portrait of Stanley Park regular Vancouver BC, Canada
My documentary arts image features a colorful local character from the Denman neighborhood facing English Bay on a park bench near the entrance to Stanley Park. One of my favorite images from the many trips to Vancouver, Canada... this portrait offers a wistful feeling of nostalgia and a story telling moment. The photograph was caught on the fly while crossing the street. I bid the gentleman greetings and asked to take a few more photographs of him... but this unobtrusive moment stuck with me in its genuineness... a perfect example of a found moment, frank and telling and a true portrait of one of Vancouver's own.
The art print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy faithfully capturing this Canadian subject. Makes a strong impression in this larger 16x20 inch format. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

No Doubt, Occupy Wall Street protest rally, Clyde Keller OWS Photo
Occupy Bend Protest Rally "No Doubt" October 29, 2011 Bend, Oregon
One of several new documentary photos showing participants in the October 29, 2011 protest against the Wall Street/Financial institutions. The Saturday event commenced at Brandis Square in downtown Bend, Oregon. Pictured are some of the three hundred plus estimated participants who marched from Brandis Square south to Franklin Street and then east to 3rd in a grand three mile circle to make their way back to the downtown area and the Deschutes County Courthouse where a protest and rally were held. Here-- protestors gather on Third Street at the Greenwood intersection to demonstrate in solidarity. OWS activist, Chris Lawler is shown center speaking into the "people's microphone." All four corners of the intersection were occupied to make a compelling statement and ask people to honk in support.
This is said to be a revolution of consciousness not limited by a single minded political "platform" transcending national boundaries throughout the world. Well educated people are demonstrating in cities throughout the world, especially in European cities where turnouts are often in the hundreds of thousands.

From Kodachrome Original
At the time this photograph was made, I lived a short distance from this dramatic viewpoint in the cozy hamlet of North Bend, Oregon. The Union Pacific Locomotive was captured with a 500mm tele lens framed as it left the trestle. You can see the engineers in the cab-- this is a beautifully detailed image.
Adjacent to the trestle is the famous Coos Bay Bridge designed by Conde B. McCullough (Oregon's master bridge builder of more than 200 historic bridges) utilizing a unique cantilever design constructed with curved upper and lower chords. Its 5,305 foot length was the longest of Oregon's highway system when built in 1936. I have posted an landscape of this bridge separately. It is entitled, "The Sky Is The Limit."

Occupy Movement OWS Protest, Clyde Keller photo
"Occupy Movement OWS Protest" Wells Fargo Bank Occupy Walden Protest Rallies Wall Street, Bend, Oregon
December 5, 2011 - Here protestors pass by the Wells Fargo Bank with their "I Am The 99%" protest signs facing towards the windows for everyone to see. Banking institutions are being targeted in their relationship with Wall Street and other financial institutions at the heart of a climate of greed and corruption. "I Am The 99%" refers to the richest one percent who sometimes act unilaterally for self interests over those of society and individuals at large and outside the boundaries of domestic and international laws. Unlike the Savings and Loan debacle where 1,800 individuals were successfully prosecuted, few if any have been charged with criminal misconduct thus far. it is estimated that since the Wall Street Crisis is over 70 times as large this could translate into perhaps as many as 140,000 individuals who could be prosecuted through U.S. court systems.
Ray Duray report--
Police Arrest 14 At 'Occupy Walden' Events
Police arrested a total of 14 protesters in Bend and Medford Monday night after they refused to leave the offices of Representative Greg Walden.
The "Occupy Walden" rallies drew inspiration from the Occupy Wall Street Movement.
In Bend and Medford, protesters set up shop in Walden’s offices for the better part of the day, refusing to leave until their demands were met. Protesters also gathered in La Grande and Hood River where they shouted slogans and carried signs saying "we are the 99 percent."
Chris Lawler is a student at Central Oregon Community College. He says the group wants Walden to hold 5 town halls in 5 months, including one during the Christmas recess. He says announcements for previous town halls were given with too little notice.
"He never gives people who disagree with some of these things a chance to speak. And if you don’t listen to people who do disagree with us, then you’re not going to understand why it’s not working for a lot of people," he said.
A spokesman for Walden says the congressman held 14 town hall meetings in the district this year. The last one was held this past August in La Pine.

"Richfield Gun Target" Manzanita Sand Dunes, Abandoned Sign Oregon coast
The photograph was taken of an older abandoned sign riddled by bullet holes and set against the backdrop of the sweep of sand dunes. I was drawn into this austere landscape by the subtext of violence with the sign serving subjectively as visual metaphor for the savage turbulence of the era... still resonant 36 years later.

This portrait of Felix McCullough was taken in September of 1977. This portrait is part of a series about the authentic pioneer heritage of the settlers to the Tuality Valley and surrounding farmlands of Washington County, Oregon.
One of my favorite images from the 1978 Valley People Documentary Series, but archived for many years. Now, 34 years later, with much of Washington County engulfed by change, these photographs are a precious historical remembrance, capturing the unvarnished flavor of its heritage. Scoggin Valley in now under water... McCullough's farm no longer exists. The Oregon Outback is a most desolate yet beautiful region, once inhabited by the Snakes Indians and now home to ranchers of cattle and sheep. My good friend, Richard Bortels called out my attention to this bullet pounded signpost, apparently used for target practice, while we were enroute to Lakeview-- so we just had to stop to take in the "country wisdom" on display near Fort Rock, Oregon.
My original archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of color, tone and brilliancy faithfully capturing this gunned down subject. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

The Oregon Outback is a most desolate yet beautiful region, once inhabited by the Snakes Indians and now home to ranchers of cattle and sheep. We found this hand written signboard (entitled "Country Wisdoms" ) while eating good grub (home made chili) at the local Paisley restaurant, well known as the Pioneer Saloon. I asked permission to slip behind the counter bracing my Nikon on the ceiling beams for a birds eye view of this authentic institution.
The three bits of wisdom read as follows:
1. A fellA who is too quick with an apology likely screws up A lot.
2. LAZy and Quarrelsome are ugly Sisters!!
3. It's downright Annoying to Argue with a fellA who knows what he's talking about!!!

Here is a vintage May 18, 1968 portrait fully restored from my pristine film negative in the second and final set from Robert F. Kennedy's Whistle Stop Stump Speech he gave at the Woodburn, Oregon train depot. Robert F. Kennedy Photo RFK STUMP SPEECH Portrait No. 26
The Robert F. Kennedy Stump Speech Portraits were captured by Clyde Keller at Woodburn, Oregon during a series of classic Whistle Stops he made between Portland and Eugene along the Willamette Valley corridor. This is the second set of his complete speech. Clyde captured Bobby's speech, rapid fire exposing two rolls of 35mm black and white film photographing every significant gesture and facial expression RFK made during this historic speech. This collection is descriptive of Kennedy's compelling emotional range as he spoke about the imposing threat of nuclear war. Kennedy fought to end the War in Vietnam; he pushed for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is as relevant today. 16x20 Inch Archival Giclee Print Image Dimensions @ 11.3x17 inches Printed on Satin Paper Signed, Titled and Dated on lower white border Clear Sleeve Protected on Foam Core Shipped Flat, Insured with Tracking The Stump Speech Portraits were captured at Woodburn, Oregon during a series of classic Whistle Stops between Portland and Eugene along the Willamette Valley corridor. Using a 300mm Nikkor with an original motorized Nikon F I captured his speech, rapid fire as RFK continually changed expressions as he discussed the issues of American Foreign Policy, Vietnam and Nationalism. I shot two rolls of 35mm black and white film photographing every significant gesture and facial expression he made during this particular speech. This collection is descriptive of Kennedy's compelling emotional range as he also spoke about the imposing threat of nuclear war. Kennedy fought to end the War in Vietnam; he pushed for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is as relevant today.
