Robert F. Kennedy Photo RFK STUMP SPEECH Portrait No. 56
The Robert F. Kennedy Stump Speech Portraits were captured by Clyde Keller at Woodburn, Oregon during a series of classic Whistle Stops he made between Portland and Eugene along the Willamette Valley corridor. This is the second set of his complete speech. Clyde captured Bobby's speech, rapid fire exposing two rolls of 35mm black and white film photographing every significant gesture and facial expression RFK made during this historic speech. This collection is descriptive of Kennedy's compelling emotional range as he spoke about the imposing threat of nuclear war. Kennedy fought to end the War in Vietnam; he pushed for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is as relevant today.

Richard M. Nixon Caught, vintage Clyde Keller documentary photo
Richard M. Nixon Caught Ungaurded portrait made at reception line Portland, Oregon 1966
Candid, off-guard and revealing portrait of Richard Nixon taken in 1966. This intimate portrayal came by chance at a reception held for Nixon after his making a speech at the old Portland Labor Temple. The pose is revealing of Nixon's darker more guarded side as he caught me peering at him with my Nikon camera at some distance through the reception line. The direct eye contact was fleeting as he resumed his social obligations with those who had come to meet and greet him. Nixon was on the rebound politically and was preparing to campaign for the U.S. Presidency. The Nikon was equipped with a 105mm Nikkor lens, a personal favorite for available light razor sharp portrait photography. Exposures were made on Kodak TRI-X film. The original negatives have been kept in dark storage and are in pristine condition!

Robert F. Kennedy Whistle Stop Profile U.S. Presidential Campaign, May 1968 Enroute to University of Oregon, May 18, 1968 RFK Speech: American Foreign Policy, Viet Nam and Nationalism
My unique Whistle Stop documentary arts photo of Bobby Kennedy was captured from inside a caboose at the Albany, Oregon Train Station. This is an unusual composition with a subjective point of view. Robert is shown with his hand to his head, a pose which can also be seen in our speech portrait of him entitled, "Pathos." Here he shown in deep shadow. The evocative (tragic) mood created by Kennedy's profile silhouette pose is framed and juxtaposed by the tuba (right) adding to the drama. The photograph was taken with an 28mm wide angle Nikkor lens, a personal favorite for working at close quarters but preserving a natural perspective. Exposures were made on Kodak TRI-X film and the pristine negative was used for the making of this "full bodied" black and white photographic print. 16x20 inch archival giclee art print Image dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border

Speech Excerpt:
“What the students of Poland now fight for, what the students of Czechoslovakia appear to have won is not a victory of ideology; it is a victory of the spirit. This spirit has been heard in the defined courtrooms of Moscow, in the streets of Spain, and in the schools all over the United States. It is he spirit of youth. It's not a time of life, but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a preference for courage over timidity; of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. It is the spirit which knows the difference between force and reason. It does not accept the failures of today as the excuse for the cruelties of tomorrow. It knows the wisdom of Archimedes and that says, 'Give me a place to stand and I can move the world,' and youth is finding a place to stand. That is the spirit I want to see return to the United States of America and that is why I'm running for President of the United States.” RFK- April 17, 1968

Kennedy fought for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is still relevant today. In this documentary portrait, taken at Portland State College, RFK addressed the relevance of the "Spirit of Youth" mindful of the "Revolutionary Spirit" that led to the foundation of the United States. He spoke of "a temper of the will" when dealing with our adversaries. Robert argued for ending the War in Vietnam, citing that the North Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, had quoted the American Declaration of Independence as their inspiration for them to declare independence from the French. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.
