"W. EUGENE SMITH" (1918-1978) August, 1966 Portrait of Photojournalist
This portrait was made of photojournalist Eugene Smith when he gave a 5 day workshop at the University of Oregon. Smith is important for his invention and development of the Photo Essay. He is known for his unwillingness to compromise as he sought to define his subject matter through a series of story telling images.
An artist, music lover as well as a photojournalist, Eugene Smith spoke poetically to us about using a "keyboard of lenses" to articulate the most important visual aspects about his subjects. He was quite frank about his struggles to get at the truth about his subjects and then to get his final prints (that he made himself) published intact. Before Smith, no one would have been able to run a photograph large across two pages of a national magazine. Smith was insistent... and argued for creative layouts of his works. He was after truth... and made great sacrifices to get at it. When LIFE Magazine "butchered" his photo essay on Albert Schweitzer he left the magazine. His career was filled with opportunities but mired by the battles that always ensued with his editors over the use of his images.
As an idealist he would not compromise... and so, in this portrait... I wanted to bring that idealism into sharp focus... his resolute vision and fragility intact. Please enjoy my personal take on this celebrated artist.

WARREN BEATTY PORTRAIT "DARK EYES" Featured as the cover photo on a new book about Warren Beatty, authored by Peter Biskind and published by Simon and Schuster. The 640 page hard cover book will be available in February 2010. It is entitled, "STAR: How Warren Beatty Seduced America."
In this vintage documentary arts portrait, I captured Warren Beatty on the sidewalks of Portland adjacent to the Benson Hotel. I asked for this pose (hand on chin) with and without his wearing sun glasses. This image combines both poses so that his eyes become visible through his dark sun glasses. Since we both stood our ground this became technically feasable making for a most unusual portrait. I used a Nikon F film camera, loaded with Kodak Tri-X and equipped with a 55mm Nikkor lens. The negatives are pristine producing a sharp looking print!

"RFK FACING ISSUES"
This intensive portrait of Robert kennedy captures a defiant determination at a Portland, Oregon Press Conference held during the May 1968 Oregon Primary. This pose, depicts an intensity in its expression and resolve as Kennedy faced his turbulent last days of the presidential campaign.
The photograph was taken with a 300mm Nikkor lens, a personal favorite for pulling in distant subject matter. Exposures were made on Kodak TRI-X film. I used the original pristine Tri-X negative to produce this razor sharp, brilliant print.
Robert Kennedy fought for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is still relevant today. This image is part of a portfolio of images selected by the RFK Center and the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority in a promotion (Fall 2008) celebrating the renaming of their Triborough Bridge to the RFK Bridge.

Retains NABF Lightweight Title 1st Round Knockout, Mike Ryan Portland, Oregon February 6, 1975
This vintage documentary news photo captures a startling victory in a story telling photo of Ray Lampkin's 1st round knockout in his successful bid to retain the NABF Title. His opponent, Mike Ryan is shown laying unconscious as the final count is given while Lampkin and his coach Mike Morton hug each other. One of my favorite celebratory photos, achieved by perching myself on top of the ropes for an all inclusive elevated, corner view of the ring. Photographed with a moderate 24mm Nikkor wide angle lens using Tri-X, a perfect combination to capture the event.

MAYOR RICARD J. DALEY (1902-1976) New York 1976, Democratic National Convention
"PROFILE"
This pristine vintage documentary image captures Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago seated as a delegate at the Democratic Convention held inside Madison Square Garden. He is shown in profile from my birds eye view looking up as I was, seated on the convention floor. Daley was the undisputed Democratic "boss" of Chicago for 21 years. He played a major role in the history of the Democratic Party giving his key support to John F. Kennedy's 1960 election. The camera I used for all of the Republican and Democratic Convention photographs were Motorized Nikons with Nikkor Lenses. Classic 1976 Republican National Convention photograph of a gregarious Vice President, Nelson Rockefeller who is shown latching on to my hand and temporarily holding me captive. One fine summer evening in Portland, an old friend of mine, a brilliant graphic designer named Michael Casey, gave me a roll of "spy" film. We were in his studio just down the hall from mine. "See what you can do with it," he mused... "it's really kind of unusual, or so I'm told."
Taking the challenge I took my trusty Nikon out of my studio and on to the street. There I was immediately confronted with the most unusual scene, a visual pun which included a billboard and trucks. The billboard headline proclaimed, "Look... Double Coupons." Beneath the billboard were two identical trucks parked side by side. So, I took the photograph of the sign and the trucks all doubled up amusing myself with this clever chance arrangement of pairs. Seldom had Madison Avenue found such a concurrency linked to an actuality!
Proceeding down the street I immediately ran into identical male twins with their identical twin vans. Holy smoke, I thought... this must be fate. I asked permission to photograph the twins in front of their vans and went on my merry way looking for more. By now I knew this was my destiny! All I could see were doubles, no matter where I turned. Snake Eyes!
This image is from the tail end of the series taken the following morning near Burnside Street in Chinatown. I began to feel a little superstitious like I was a character in a Fellini movie (or exhausted from the delirium) so at this point I called it quits. No more Juliet of the Spirits, at least not until the film was processed and prints were made. The resulting collection of Doubles Prints turned out to be a quite a hit... here's one brought out of the box from the past... please enjoy.

The portrait of Angel's Jewels was taken as part of a photo documentary project included for viewing at a national conference held in Portland, Oregon, entitled Wages, Welfare Or What? The show highlighted some of the issues under discussion as it related to full employment, health care and poverty. At the time of the conference, the Humphrey Hawkins Bill, sponsored in part by former Vice president, Hubert Humphrey, was under intense discussion.
The subject shown in this documentary photograph figured in the larger conversation. Angel's Jewels and all other stores located on this downtown Portland block were scheduled for demolition to make way for a parking lot. Tragically, elderly citizens who lived in hotels on the block were forced to move without anywhere to go... and sadly one of the great movie houses from the silent era, The Blue Mouse, was torn down.

"WINO IN THE BUSH"
The portrait of a "wino" was taken as part of a photo documentary project included for viewing at a national conference held in Portland, Oregon, entitled Wages, Welfare Or What? The show highlighted some of the issues under discussion as it related to full employment, health care and poverty. At the time of the conference, the Humphrey Hawkins Bill, sponsored in part by former Vice president, Hubert Humphrey, was under intense discussion.
The subject shown in this documentary photograph figured in the larger conversation concerning displaced local residents who were forced to vacate to make way for the construction of a parking lot in downtown Portland, Oregon. Tragically, elderly citizens who lived in hotels on the block were forced to move... and sadly one of the great movie houses from the silent era, The Blue Mouse, was torn down. I found this person where he is shown with his bottle with really no where to go. Behind him, looming in the background are the newer buildings of the downtown slyline.
The portrait of Michael Harrington was taken as part of a photo documentary project concerning a national conference held in Portland, Oregon concerning the topic of full employment. At the time the Humphrey Hawkins Bill, sponsored in part by former Vice president, Hubert Humphrey, was under intense discussion. The conference (Wages Welfare Or What?) became a public forum to discuss issues of employment, health care and poverty as they affected Oregonians. My portrait of Harrington was was made during an afternoon speech he made, breaking from the conference. This is a studied composition where the trees in the park blocks (with their repetitive forms) became an essential "character" in the composition. It remains an absolute favorite.
Michael Harrington is the author of "The Other America: Poverty in the United States." He is well known as a Democratic Socialist Leader in American Politics. At the time of this photo, he taught political science at Queens College in New York. He is associated for his influence on the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, especially for Johnson's infamous War On Poverty Program. Harrington helped to found the Democratic Socialist Oreganizing Committee (DSOC) which opposed the Viet Nam War.

Here is an impromptu portrait of one of the "old-timers" of the Haro Street Community, Lee Brown, as caught on one of his daily walks surveying the grounds around his three story apartment complex which he manages. We were parking our car in the alley behind the Buchan Hotel when Lee emerged to greet us. Like many Canadians we have met, Lee is quite amiable and willing to share his love of Vancouver and its rich history. Haro Street has the rare quality of mixing residential area homes, apartments, hotels, gardens and parks into a seamless delightful whole. Part of a continuing series on Vancouver, British Columbia, celebrating its people, architecture and beauty.
