Portrait of Jane Gallagher of Australia who officially became a landed immigrant on May 8, 2006. She is shown at her new job at the old Doggy Style Deli located on Denman Street in Vancouver BC when this portrait was taken. The portrait celebrates an aspect of the bright outlook immigrants are making to this dynamic international city. The image was taken in early June, shortly after Jane's arrival and granting of immigration status. A lovely wideportrait of three regulars who frequent Delany's Coffee House on Denman Street (a local hot-spot) found on the way to English Bay. This is a composite panorama made from three separate horizontal photographs and then stitched together using our panoramic tools software.

This interpretive documentary arts image was photographed in Vancouver BC (June 2, 2006) where Denman and Davies Streets converge and very near the entrance to Stanley Park. The entrance to the Beach Loop Promenade is pictured with figures shown in silhouette. The watercolor approach seemed appropriate for the pictorial subject matter. This allowed to key into the late afternoon mood created by the cloud formations and pervasively warm light.

This a charming impressionist nighttime view looking through the window into the interior of this popular local eatery hangout on Denman Street. A single available light capture with white balancing was made from inside the restaurant before making the exterior exposure. Here is an impromptu portrait of one of the "old-timers" of the Haro Street Community, Lee Brown, as caught on one of his daily walks surveying the grounds around his three story apartment complex which he manages. We were parking our car in the alley behind the Buchan Hotel when Lee emerged to greet us. Like many Canadians we have met, Lee is quite amiable and willing to share his love of Vancouver and its rich history. Haro Street has the rare quality of mixing residential area homes, apartments, hotels, gardens and parks into a seamless delightful whole. Featured are eight totems found within Stanley Park facing Coal Harbor representing various Indian equivilents for their "Coat of Arms." From left to right hey are the Oscar Maltipi Pole, Beaver Crest Pole, Chief Eakas Pole, Sky Chief Pole, Kaka'solas, Thunderbird House Post, Ga'akstalas and the Chief Skedans Mortuary Pole, far right. These unique totems are all carved from western red cedar. In this interpretive documentary arts photo the background has been given a dreamy quality while the totems remain in their full color in the mid day sun. The effect allows the totems to float against this dreamy backdrop and to emerge within the context of their spirit. Please enjoy.

"ROBSON STREET TOWERS"
This is a wide angle panoramic view of the impressive architectural buildings populating the Vancouver, B.C. skyline taken from nearby Robson Street near Hon's restaurant. I was particularly drawn to the red tour bus, quaint side street and the glass and steel buildings towering above. Much of the architecture throughout this world-class city feels like a stage setting for a futuristic sci-fi movie... but it is very much in the here and now with fantastic urban planning (gardens, wide setbacks, etc.) to make this a most livable city. These residential buildings tower over the nearby Robson Street shopping district without posing the traffic congestion problems typically found stateside with their greater reliance on the passenger car.

Akira is fantastic "hole in the wall" restaurant located at 1069 Denman Street in Vancouver BC, Canada. Shown is a sushi seafood entree called Nabeyaki Udon served in an cast cast bowl. Udon is a thick white noodle in soup, a specialty that never fails to deliver. When the entree was delivered we couldn't believe how good it looked... hence this natural light photograph taken just before dinner began.

This documentary arts image features a colorful character from the Denman neighborhood facing English Bay on a park bench near the entrance to Stanley Park. One of my favorite images from the many trips to Vancouver, Canada... this image offers a wistful feeling of nostalgia and a story telling moment. The photograph was caught on the fly while crossing the street. I bid the gentleman greetings and asked to take a few more photographs of him... but this unobtrusive moment stuck with me in its genuineness... a perfect example of a found moment, frank and telling and a true portrait of one of Vancouver's own.

What struck me immediately about this late afternoon summer street scene was the incredible range of diffused but brilliant light. Transformed into black and white the print reveals an altered reality of what is an otherwise common everyday scene. The subject brightness range has been expanded through bracketing exposures to bring sky, clouds, buildings and street into a dazzling coherency! The location was quite near the HMV Music Store on Robson Street in downtown Vancouver.
Robson offers a magnificent variety of international restaurants and shops known world wide for its high fashion and Art Museum, just a few blocks away from this photograph's location. This impromptu portrait features Victor who is a regular to Delany's Coffee House. We found good espresso and conversation with this bright Canadian at his popular hangout. Established in 1993 Delany's is located on Denman Street near English Bay. Regarding the "look" of this print... only the figure's color and his coffee cup have been preserved while the surrounding ambient environment is entirely in monochrome. One of my favorite images from the many trips to Vancouver, Canada... Victor offered great conversation and an undeniable graphic appeal with his checkered shirt and flowing beard. In this impromptu photo, I struck up a conversation with Victor and was able to photograph him as we made our exchanges. This type of casual technique produces results which can offer fine portraiture, true to life and sureness of character. Victor made us feel quite welcome as he opened up his world to us.

This widefield panorama features a handsome Taro Leaf (known in Fuji as Dalio) set against a backdrop of floral blooms in one of the many beautiful gardens that grace this magnificent world-class city.
