This is my earliest surviving Kodachrome from 1962 made when I was still fourteen years old-- and a glimpse at Yamasaki's Arches in a beautiful composition. Designed by Minoru Yamasaki, Pacific Science Center's white arches rise above a court of reflecting pools. The image was captured near the Century 21 Exposition which featured the Astronaut John Glen exhibit, (first man to orbit the earth) located outside the Pacific Science Center not far from where this photo was captured. Glen's Space Capsule, drew huge crowds, but I was equally drawn to this magnificent pictorial view.

The color is in remarkable condition-- the original was kept in dark storage and shows little if any deterioration after 48 years! Please enjoy!

This archival color giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy faithfully capturing this vintage view now 30 years ago. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing. The title art is on the print, but not the copyright information.

Cannon Beach Storm
View from Ecola State Park, Christmas Day 1963

My Christmas Day storm photo has remained one of my personal favorites for nearly 48 years.  It was captured in the midst of blustery winds and incessant rain.  I had made a trek through the woods at the south end of Ecola Park from my grandmother's beach house.  Luckily, there was a lull as I emerged from the woods to capture a brief burst of distant sunlight breaking through the dense cloud cover.  Still, my lens had to be protected from the rain and the storm resumed less than a minute after I captured this memorable seascape.  Please enjoy... I've yet to see anything like this since!

A LIFETIME TOGETHER depicts an older couple enjoying a summer day in their backyard. I made this photograph as a teenager while at a friend's house-- the view was captured of the older couple unobtrusively as they sat directly across the street in plain view. The scene was photographed in an older Portland neighborhood near Mt. Tabor. I never knew much about them or even met them. It was only years later when going through my earlier work that I rediscovered this image. I was impressed with it at the time and had made an 11x14 inch black and white print, but later retired it to storage.

Much has been made of the symbolism of the elderly couple spending time together in a natural idealistic setting. Its power apparently dwells within a romantic conceptualization and realization for a lifetime spent together. I cannot deny the public's enchantment with this enduring image. I can only postulate that its power is amplified in part by its mysterious nature. Like a gestalt we allow our inner yearnings to project beyond the mundane in our quest to find a deeper more fulfilled meaning towards life's uncertain journey.

The donut holes in the background are the result from the special 500mm telephoto lens in use, a limited production Nikkor telephoto that employed mirrors in place of glass elements. The effect adds to the mood complementing the woman's paisley pattern dress... this portrait has proven to be a favorite since it was taken, a moment observed over 47 years ago.

This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonal color, depth and brilliancy... faithfully capturing this poetic subject. Makes a strong impression. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

Original portrait by Clyde Keller
Lawrence Leighton Smith
Encore performance, Oregon Symphony
Portland, Oregon, 1975

This vintage 1975 portrait of symphony conductor and pianist Lawrence Leighton Smith (born April 8, 1936) was captured at the conclusion of an encore performance by the Oregon Symphony. Originally published in a local Portland magazine (One Dollar, edited by James Kiehl) the image proved so popular as to be used extensively (several million impressions reported) by the Oregon Symphony in their promotions for the following year.

Lawrence Smith served as music director of the Oregon Symphony between 1973-1980. As a guest conductor he has been associated with domestic and international orchestras. Here in Oregon he served as the music director of the Sunriver Music Festival for over 17 seasons.

According to Wikipedia his recordings include “The Moscow Sessions” for Sheffield Lab (for which he became the first American born conductor to conduct the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986). Sheffield lab is well established as one of the first audiophile labels to perfect the analog recording process during the digital era. As a pianist Wikipedia lists these artists he has accompanied: Franco Corelli, Sherrill Milnes, Zara Nelsova, Ruggiero Ricci, Jennie Tourel, Renata Tebaldi, Walter Trampler, and Pinchas Zukerman.

Atomic Reactor Core

Trojan Nuclear Power Plant
Columbia River near Portland, Oregon

Interpretive art print based upon 1975 photograph

The Trojan Nuclear Power Plant was a pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant located near Rainier, Oregon. Here is an imaginative view and rendering of the heart of the controversial reactor core gleaming with its nuclear class rod travel housings and exotic metallurgy. To see it in the flesh was most impressive as it strangely resembled a high tech pipe organ. My vantage point looks up at the reactor core from the floor of the pressurized containment vessel, a rare view indeed. The image was captured before the plant opened in October 1975. It operated for 16 years before it was shut down in 1993. Of note is that the cost of construction and subsequent demolition cost nearly a billion dollars in total. Its history was fraught with technical problems and safety concerns. The Trojan Decommissioning Alliance, founded by Lloyd Marbet, led the environmental opposition staging protests. Ballot measures calling for the plant's closure were defeated in 1980, 1986, 1990 and 1992 but with PGE plant operators committing to earlier retirement than the estimated 30 years lifespan or in early 2011.

Pictured in relief are participants in a performance arts dramatization of support for Cuba and to "Break The Blockade" against this country's trade and economic embargo against them.  The protest against the embargo directed at Cuba was designed to end the strangulation of the Cuban economy by multinational corporate and banking interests that wanted to end the socialist experiment. My new Art Print commemorates the continued protest that is supported by a majority of countries throughout the world to end the embargo. The concert (held in 1976 at the old Academy of Music in NYC) was electrifying and my first exposure to the poetry of feminist political activist, June Jordan. The concert included June's recital from her 1972 work, "Poems of Exile and Return." Included in this small portfolio are images drawn from the concert including music and theatrical expressions against US Imperialism. The staged event memorializes this protest (which banners boldly declared as a blockade) and sent a message for ending the needless cruelty against Cuba which endures to this day nearly 35 years later.

On the day President John F. Kennedy died a personal representative had been directed to meet with Castro about the possibility of normalizing the relationship between Cuba and the United States. With Kennedy's death the hope for the normalization of relations between the two countries died. Castro has publicly stated in a recent interview that if President John F. Kennedy had not been assassinated, there was no question but that relations between Cuba and the United States would have probably improved. Instead, the economic embargo has continued for decades. Kennedy's views challenged the status-quo of the Washington D.C. power brokers by calling for more peaceful forms of cooperation with the Soviet Union and its allies. Kennedy stood for curtailing the devastating influence of U.S. hegemony toward the third world. He was sympathetic to nationalistic movements throughout the third world because he understood the anti-colonial sentiments of the peoples of Africa, Latin America and Asia. Now, 34+ years later this photograph still dramatizes the continued frustration many have throughout the world with the imperial aspects of American Foreign Policy.

Uncle Sam Protest

In Concert With Cuba, Break The Blockade (Economic Trade Embargo)
July 24, 1976 NYC, Academy of Music Concert Hall
Stage Performance Documentary Photograph by Clyde keller

In this documentary arts image Uncle Sam is classically posed riding atop the backs of workers in a double entendre illustrating the exploitative effects of the American Empire upon the impoverished Third World. Its biting satire brutalizes the symbolism of the American icon inverting its intended meaning in a protest against Cold War tactics.  The staged event memorializes this protest and sent a message for ending the economic trade embargo against Cuba which endures to this day  nearly 35 years later.

On the day President John F. Kennedy died a personal representative had been directed to meet with Castro about the possibility of normalizing the relationship between Cuba and the United States. Subway Embrace

New York City, Summer 1976

Part of a collection of photographs taken during and near the time of the 1976 New York Democratic Convention when I spent several months in NYC. This haunting portrait of young lovers about to embrace (against the stark  backdrop of graffiti) was taken on a subway in Manhattan en route to the North Bronx.  It is a popular image that still resonates nearly 35 years later.

Double take:
Abe Lincoln with Nude
Kansas City, 1976 Republican Convention

Part of a collection of photographs taken during and near the time of the 1976 Republican Convention held in Kansas City. The character of Abe Lincoln added color to the Convention, and he is captured here with shopping bag, waving an American Flag. The nude was photographed in my studio and the two images were combined for a surreal "double take" of unlikely subjects inhabiting an otherwise ordinary street scene.  The visual paradox is augmented by the juxtaposition of the nude receding into the darkness of the shopping window as the figure in costume advances towards us.  In the middle of this madcap visual mayhem we are presented with a dash of patriotic zeal for all things free spirited.

Mayor Richard J. Daley (1902-1976)

Boss Profile
New York 1976, Democratic National Convention

My documentary image captures Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago seated as a delegate at the Democratic Convention held inside Madison Square Garden.   He is shown in profile from my birds eye view looking up as I was, seated on the convention floor.  Daley was the undisputed Democratic "boss" of Chicago for 21 years.  He played a major role in the history of the Democratic Party giving his key support to John F. Kennedy's 1960 election. The camera I used for all of the Republican and Democratic Convention photographs were Motorized Nikon cameras with Nikkor Lenses. This photograph was taken on the with an 180mm Nikkor telephoto, a personal favorite for fast available light work when a longer unobtrusive "reach" was appropriate.  Made from the original pristine negative with full tonal range and exquisite sharpness.

This photo is on permanent display at the Chicago Police Department, Precinct 9.

1977, Frances Fox Piven, A Democratic Vision, Clyde Keller photo 1977, Frances Fox Piven, A Democratic Vision, Clyde Keller photo

Frances Fox Piven
A Democratic Vision
Glenn Beck Hate Speech Dissent Article
Photo and Article by Clyde Keller

"Democracy demands that people have some understanding of what's going on, of what there own interests are, of who their enemies are. And, moneyed propagandists have taken advantage of that to create a demonology in which it is the democratic left that is the source of all our troubles."

Francis Fox Piven on Democracy Today

Frances Fox Piven is a distinguished professor of political science and sociology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. As an educator, and author she has worked tirelessly for nearly four decades with issues concerning the poor and the disadvantaged. She is a member of the Democratic Party and has always worked within the mainstream of American politics.

Because of the recent and continuing barrage of death threats against Piven, I am offering my vintage 1976 portrait of her as someone I both admire and have followed since first meeting her in 1976. I met her withinin the framework of an event in part sponsored by the Democratic Party and in support for legislation that would have created full employment, an idea that still has merit in our current atmosphere of home foreclosures and job losses.

The "obsessive attacks" making the news are from TV commentator Glenn Beck. For nearly two years (according to Piven) Beck has falsely accused her of being a Revolutionary, Socialist or Communist, essentially scaring his viewers into believing that she must be stopped. Beck uses inflammatory, violent rhetoric and imagery comparing her to Nazis and more. He strikes fear into his viewers warning that she is trying to "crash the system" - that she is undermining American Democracy. He ignores the fact that she has devoted her life to the principle that "Democracy rests on inclusive participation by an entire population" as she has stated many times.

These attacks on Piven were recently highlighted on the Democracy Now television program in which Piven was an invited guest. She made several comments about the numerous death threats she has received since Beck began attacking her. It was pointed out that while Beck was not directly advocating violence he was literally giving his listeners the "road map" to then act against her, possibly leading to her death. These unnerving threats are published in his blog entitled The Blaze. Beck has yet to remove any of the death threats made by these bloggers as of January 20, 2011.

In her final statement on the Democracy Now TV interview, Piven clarifies what she feels is the real threat that Beck's hate speech represents.

Piven states: "Democracy demands that people have some understanding of what's going on, of what there own interests are, of who their enemies are. And, moneyed propagandists have taken advantage of that to create a demonology in which it is the democratic left that is the source of all our troubles. This is the most frightening development rather than the kind of nutty death threats. It's a rather frightening development because it raises the question of whether a democracy can survive and re-emerge with any kind of health in the face of these enormous propaganda capacities (Rupert Murdoch & Company) and in that sense it is Murdoch not Beck who is the more important target."

The idea of indirectly empowering people to acts of violence by our leaders or pundits is extremely dangerous. It has led in the past to wholesale genocide with over 50 million deaths throughout the world since the end of WWII. Genocide begins within the framework of false hate speech and the sanctioning of violence made by leaders who have ordinary people do their killing for them.

At the time of this 1976 portrait, Piven (now 78 years old) was invited to participate in a conference where the issues of full employment (Humphrey Hawkins Bill) were under discussion. She along with Michael Harrington, author of "The Other America" spoke about the plight of the unemployed. In this portrait she is addressing many hundreds of people who came to listen to her and others.

"Seattle Summer Skyline"
The View Across Elliott Bay
Seattle, Washington, 1979

From original Kodachrome

This urban skyscape chronicles the Old Seattle skyline (the year Microsoft moved back to Seattle) in its last days before the onset of the 1980s and it's emergence as the Emerald City. As shown the harbor is bustling with activity as seen from atop West Seattle and looking across Elliott Bay towards the downtown area showing cargo container ships and ferries as well as a jet in flight over the emerging downtown skyline. The city still stands tall but the ferries have been replaced and the landscape has changed over the past three decades with many new skyscrapers populating the landscape. Part of a larger 1980 photographic art calendar project entitled "Market & Square." The popular calendar was dedicated to the many people who fought for the preservation of Pioneer Square and the Pike Place Market... and to the Artisans, Farmers, Street Musicians, Merchants and everyone who has ever known the market and Square.

Swept Away
Seeking Newer Worlds...
Sailing on Puget Sound
Seattle, Washington

From Original 1981 Kodachrome

"Swept Away" captures a sailboat surrounded by a golden wash of highly reflected light as was found in the late afternoon 29 years ago on Puget Sound. The nineteenth century poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote metaphorically of seeking newer worlds-- of "sailing beyond the sunset." It seems this vintage image from 1981 can serve to relive an all but forgotten romanticism in a contemporary setting- capturing a feeling of being caught up and being swept away by the drama of an isolated sailboat--  and to imagine other worlds and adventures that await.

This poetic image is included in a larger documentary project concerning the entire Puget Sound region.

This vintage 1980 alluring portrait of Dawn Elberta Wells (born October 18, 1938) was taken in her dressing room before she went on stage. Dawn is well known for her role playing Mary Ann Summers (America's Sweetheart - the girl next door) on the television sitcom, Gilligan's Island, from 1964 until 1967. I spent about half an hour with her for this portrait session. She was a real kick to photograph because she was constantly cutting up- I tried to keep up with her and went through two rolls of film. The Nature That Is Ours
Skagit River, Washington
From Original Kodachrome

In this romantic view of the Skagit River I am giving homage to the nineteenth century writings of Wordsworth and Tennyson who wrote of such concepts as,
"The Nature That Is Ours."  This inspirational photo is augmented by a cloud cover that partially obscured the sun. My image reflects a naturalism that has been championed over time by many artists, writers and poets who sensed a tremendous loss resulting since the advent of the industrial age.eand wrote critically of this new process of dehumanization-- and metaphorically of seeking newer worlds-- of sailing beyond the sunset.

This poetic image is included in a larger documentary project concerning the folk and history of the inhabitants of the Skagit Valley.

A Double Negative of Tonal Values in the Abstract
Hood River, Oregon

Things are not quite what they seem in this surreal photograph of an underpass found near the Columbia River just out of Hood River. In this study of an imposing concrete bulwark, negative and positive values are inverted, rendering the concrete forms with surprising results. The manipulation of tonal values presents a sunlit feeling rippling withinside the shadowy areas whilst the bolts of light striking diagonally across the face of the wall possess an expanded range of tonality and luminosity.  I used a 15mm Nikkor ultrawide lens to take in the entire structure. This is an image to be studied and to enjoy... both in the abstract and concrete.

On Sacred Grounds

Oregon Outback at Summer lake
Ancient mortar and pestle in historical setting
May 22, 2008 near Paisley

An intimate photographic view of stone artifacts ( Mortar & Pestel) placed back into their natural setting at a lake shore once inhabited by the Snakes Indians (including Northern Paiute, Pitt and Shoshone) for a period of nearly 7,000 years. These semi-nomadic gatherers inhabited the Lakeview region of Oregon. Artifacts are quite similar to those displayed at the Favell Museum in Klamath Falls. Many of the examples on display at the museum were found during the foundation excavation while the facility was being built and represent works by the Klamath and Modoc indians. The volcanic materials from which these Mortars were made extend eastward into the Lakeview region. Our Mortar and Pestel came from a farm over 85 years ago (1920s) in that area. It is a particularly beautiful unspoiled example in unbroken condition.

Sacred Shoreline
Oregon Outback, Summer Lake
Native American Indians site
Winterly dust storm approaches

The Snakes Indians used to inhabit the very ground upon which I stood to take this eerie pictorial documentary landscape. I couldn't help but be reminded of how much this scene location resembled some of the Edward Curtis lake shore photos of Native American Indians.

It was supposed to be Spring... but dust storms raged across the high desert plains engulfing this beautiful lake area. That night a lightning storm ensued, taking out our cabin's power along with the water supply. In the morning it was snowing and it sure felt like Winter. But this remarkable color image was only possible because of such dramatic and unusual weather conditions.

The Snows of Time

Fantasia from the Oregon Cascades
Maupin Highlands

I sometimes imagine vistas from my back door that conjure romantic notions of far off places like the Himalayas. In this interpretive montage, rugged Oregon Cascades mountains are brought close to home, so to speak, to give dimension to our Tibetan figure of stone who is seemingly burdened with new fallen snow. This bit of impressionist whimsy can be yours to enjoy in this beautiful art print, signed of course by yours truly.

Clyde's museum grade print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy capturing this snowy Oregon Cascades subject. Makes a strong impression in this larger 16x20 inch format. Suitable for immediate safe viewing and ready for framing.

The Times they are Pathetic

Lyrics for song by Terrence E. Paupp

In this surreal, interpretive Art Print- I was inspired by prose written by my friend Terrence E. Paupp.  Normally, Terry writes books about World Governance and World Peace, but with a continuing stream of dismal headlines and the feeling that our country is headed towards financial catastrophe as if we were all embarked on a doomed vessel such as the Titanic, Terry wrote this poem (or song) to relieve the stress.  So, here's the inspiration which led to my own creative work in response to his sardonic lament-- and counterpoint to Bob Dylan's - Times They are a-Changin.

Lyrics:

We all live in Pathetic Times-
We share a Pathetic Culture-
We experience Pathetic Things-

We're exposed to Pathetic People-
Who are collectively headed toward a Pathetic End
And hence our lives are doomed to be Pathetic
Through no fault of our own

Chorus:

Some will say the people are myopic
Some will say the people are pedantic
Some will say they like trivial things too much
But I say they are all just Pathetic

Mt. Bachelor from Elk (Moolack) Lake
Oregon High Cascades (Chinuk Wawa)
Original Clyde Keller panorama

This dramatic panorama of Mt. Bachelor rekindles the Native American mythos of the "Spirit-Power Mountain" framed with a reverence for ritual as pertaining to place. Mt. Bachelor is an active shield volcano, one of many that comprise the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the Cascade Range. Assembled from several images taken with an extreme telephoto lens, the final image encompasses sky, clouds, mountain and lake.

Here is my homage to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange who had won in the reader's poll conducted by Time Magazine as the Person of the Year. My art print incorporates public domain images and text of code from the recent Embassy Cables, in a new creative design that underscores Julian's philosophy and commitment to full internet transparency in this information age.  The image doubles as one of those rare instances where my graphic approach links up with contemporary world views.

Assange is a symbol for those who yearn to live in a world free from hegemony, secrets, lies, wars and repression. His work is widely supported throughout the world (75% from December 21st Poll by ZDnet) more so than it is domestically at 51%, but the fact is that he has not been charged with breaking any existing laws throughout the world and WikiLeaks release of confidential documents is supported by every major newspaper worldwide as being in the public's best interest. In a recent article appearing in Spiegel International, Thomas Darnstadt comments that, "Since 9/11, press freedom in the West has come under attack as governments argue that national security is more important than transparency. But the hunt for WikiLeaks is a greater danger to democracy than any information that WikiLeaks might reveal."
