"Occupy
Walden Protests"
Downtown office occupation
Bend, Oregon

December 5, 2011 - Exterior photo showing the office building and location for Congressman Greg Walden's office, downtown Bend, Oregon. Pictured are Occupy Bend protestors holding a large banner which asks, "Where's Walden."

Ray Duray report--

Police Arrest 14 At 'Occupy Walden' Events

Police arrested a total of 14 protesters in Bend and Medford Monday night after they refused to leave the offices of Representative Greg Walden.

The "Occupy Walden" rallies drew inspiration from the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

In Bend and Medford, protesters set up shop in Walden’s offices for the better part of the day, refusing to leave until their demands were met. Protesters also gathered in La Grande and Hood River where they shouted slogans and carried signs saying "we are the 99 percent."

Chris Lawler is a student at Central Oregon Community College. He says the group wants Walden to hold 5 town halls in 5 months, including one during the Christmas recess. He says announcements for previous town halls were given with too little notice.

"He never gives people who disagree with some of these things a chance to speak. And if you don’t listen to people who do disagree with us, then you’re not going to understand why it’s not working for a lot of people," he said.

A spokesman for Walden says the congressman held 14 town hall meetings in the district this year. The last one was held this past August in La Pine.

"Our Lady Liberty"

Statue of Liberty from Ferry
New York, July 1977

Interpretive Art Print based upon the July 1977 photograph

Inspired by the beautiful antil-war song written and performed by Sonja L. Reiter with the talented Jon Bach on piano. I took this documentary photo on the way to Ellis Island from the ferry boat looking out towards the Statue of Liberty and to Ellis Island where so many immigrants to the United States first set shore.  "Lady Liberty" the subject of her poignant song signifies the importance of this symbol for universal human rights and more recently-- a world free from war.

Speech Excerpt:

“What the students of Poland now fight for, what the students of Czechoslovakia appear to have won is not a victory of ideology; it is a victory of the spirit. This spirit has been heard in the defined courtrooms of Moscow, in the streets of Spain, and in the schools all over the United States. It is he spirit of youth. It's not a time of life, but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a preference for courage over timidity; of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. It is the spirit which knows the difference between force and reason. It does not accept the failures of today as the excuse for the cruelties of tomorrow. It knows the wisdom of Archimedes and that says, 'Give me a place to stand and I can move the world,' and youth is finding a place to stand. That is the spirit I want to see return to the United States of America and that is why I'm running for President of the United States.”  RFK- April 17, 1968

Here is a beautiful reminder of Robert Kennedy . This portrait dates from the US presidential campaign during the May Oregon Primary. The photograph was taken at one of his Whistle Stop Stump Speeches with a 300mm Nikkor telephoto, a personal... razor sharp favorite.

Please visit a wonderful site on FB entitled, Robert F.Kennedy- Taken From Us, But Never Forgotten created by Jordan Tekelve: http://www.facebook.com/clyde.keller1?ref=profile#!/group.php?gid=2207306288

Robert was a living embodiment of his slain brother. He represents the resurrection of the promise that he and his brother embodied while in the White House. That restoration, after Dallas, took many forms: Civil Rights at home, Human Rights abroad and the end of Apartheid for all people. His message and charisma and his policies were understood as ending all of the cruel and artificial divisions allowing him to bring a process of healing between people. Please enjoy... and by all means let us hear from you.

"The Art of Peace"
Portland State College Speech
April 17, 1968

Kennedy fought for Civil Rights as Attorney General; his positive vision for the advancement of peace, justice, equality and responsibility is still relevant today.  In this documentary portrait, taken at Portland State College, RFK addressed the relevance of the "Spirit of Youth" mindful of the "Revolutionary Spirit" that led to the foundation of the United States. He spoke of "a temper of the will" when dealing with our adversaries. Robert argued for ending the War in Vietnam, citing that the North Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, had quoted the American Declaration of Independence as their inspiration for them to declare independence from the French. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.
