ROBERT KENNEDY COLLECTION

"ALONE"

Compelling, definitive portrait of this most notable American taken less than three weeks before his death. Photograph was taken at the Portland International Airport during the May Oregon Primary. In this vintage documentary arts image I used a motorized Nikon with a 300mm telephoto lens with the needed reach to capture Bobby with his dog, Freckles. The original pristine Tri-X negative was used to produce this striking print.

1977 Clyde Keller Photo, Doubles Series, TWO ON THE SKID 1977 Clyde Keller Photo, Doubles Series, TWO ON THE SKID

DOCUMENTARY ARTS PORTFOLIO
From the 1977 "DOUBLES" Series

"TWO ON THE SKID"

One fine summer evening in Portland, an old friend of mine, a brilliant graphic designer named Michael Casey, gave me a roll of "spy" film. We were in his studio just down the hall from mine. "See what you can do with it," he mused... "it's really kind of unusual, or so I'm told."

Taking the challenge I took my trusty Nikon out of my studio and on to the street. There I was immediately confronted with the most unusual scene, a visual pun which included a billboard and trucks. The billboard headline proclaimed, "Look... Double Coupons." Beneath the billboard were two identical trucks parked side by side. So, I took the photograph of the sign and the trucks all doubled up amusing myself with this clever chance arrangement of pairs. Seldom had Madison Avenue found such a concurrency linked to an actuality!

Proceeding down the street I immediately ran into identical male twins with their identical twin vans. Holy smoke, I thought... this must be fate. I asked permission to photograph the twins in front of their vans and went on my merry way looking for more. By now I knew this was my destiny! All I could see were doubles, no matter where I turned. Snake Eyes!

This image is from the tail end of the series taken the following morning near Burnside Street in Chinatown. I began to feel a little superstitious like I was a character in a Fellini movie (or exhausted from the delirium) so at this point I called it quits. No more Juliet of the Spirits, at least not until the film was processed and prints were made. The resulting collection of Doubles Prints turned out to be a quite a hit... here's one brought out of the box from the past... please enjoy.

"DARK SHADOWS ON LOVEJOY"

Part of a collection of my SHADOW BOX CAMERA SERIES.

The night comes alive in this 1977 hip goth photo of cast shadows made inside a Gothic Victorian bedroom found on Lovejoy Street in a NW Portland, Oregon neighborhood. The lensless shadow box camera captures the light directly as it fell upon the wall. The exposure was made by mounting the Shadow Box Camera (containing one large 11x14 inch sheet of film) on a wall and by removing its lid to make the exposure for several seconds. Of course, I had to wait until night when the nocturnal street lighting would project through the antique window glass, itself possessing many imperfections and striations. The striations were cast on to the wall creating an other worldly luminosity. The distant street lamps projecting shadows of varying intensity from their different locations adds to a sense of the macabre serving as a backdrop for the projections of the nearby candle holder and plant less than three feet away.

"THE FIREFIGHTERS"

The documentary arts photograph was taken during a poignant moment when three of the Bend, Oregon firefighting Battalion led by Captain David Mackenzie, gathered by their equipment, held in sequestration, during the height of the DEQ fire. This backlit scene is transformed by the sunlight streaming through the thick smoldering smoke and glistening snow shown right.  The fire caused about $95,000 damage to the Department of Environmental Quality offices on NE 4th Street in Bend, Oregon.

This documentary arts image features a colorful character from the Denman neighborhood facing English Bay on a park bench near the entrance to Stanley Park.  One of my favorite images from the many trips to Vancouver, Canada... this image offers a wistful feeling of nostalgia and a story telling moment. The photograph was caught on the fly while crossing the street. I bid the gentleman greetings and asked to take a few more photographs of him... but this unobtrusive moment stuck with me in its genuineness... a perfect example of a found moment, frank and telling and a true portrait of one of Vancouver's own.

What struck me immediately about this late afternoon summer street scene was the incredible range of diffused but brilliant light. Transformed into black and white the print reveals an altered reality of what is an otherwise common everyday scene. The subject brightness range has been expanded through bracketing exposures to bring sky, clouds, buildings and street into a dazzling coherency! The location was quite near the HMV Music Store on Robson Street in downtown Vancouver.

Robson offers a magnificent variety of international restaurants and shops known world wide for its high fashion and Art Museum, just a few blocks away from this photograph's location. This exquisite Wide-Field Panoramic Landscape captures a northerly vista of the dramatic basaltic High Cascades Plateau lava flows found near the Dee Wright Observatory withinside the Belknap Crater Region. Print is imbued with a wide range color gamut capturing the atmosphere and dramatic scale of this recent 1,500 year old lava flow.

The photograph was taken June 29, 2007 inside the Belknap Crater region. A telephoto Nikkor lens was employed to capture the 32x10 degree sweep, atmosphere and stark contrast of the rough, jagged "clinkery" surface of the basaltic lava flows. The panorama was made facing intermittent 20 mph wind gusts and drizzle, both a technical challenge. Note the wild flowers shown far left and the atmospheric effects of the inclement weather. The violence and huge scale of the basaltic flow is shown to impressive effect by the use of panoramic technique.

Author, Terrence E. Paupp comments on the specialness of RFK in the context of this art poster designed by Clyde Keller.

Terrence writes: "Connecting to the world, a myriad of hands reached back to Robert during his last few weeks in response to his energy and profound message. Robert was a living embodiment of his slain brother. He represents the resurrection of the promise that he and his brother embodied while in the White House. That restoration, after Dallas, took many forms: Civil Rights at home, Human Rights abroad and the end of Apartheid for all people. His message and charisma and his policies were understood as ending all of the cruel and artificial divisions allowing him to bring a process of healing between people."

"Clyde's graphic art print symbolizes a special man in a special era which cannot be duplicated. Radiance of his personality, his charisma and his message all combined into one cloth. This was a palpable radiance that could be seen, touched and felt."

The Signed Print offers a bold range of color, graphic realism... artfully capturing this important American politician. Makes a strong graphic impression. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is shrink wrapped on foam core board) and ready for framing.

The view captures a close-up view of a picturesque truck door found at the East Lake Resort withinside the Newberry National Volcanic Monument Park.  The old truck was brightly lit by the afternoon sun. The play of light shows off the antique forms juxtaposed by the bright saturated colors found on the pink rusty door and green wood framed pickup bed. The setting by East Paulina Lake is perfect for this old 1940s truck which once served the needs of the resort. An intimate photographic view of stone artifacts ( Mortar & Pestel) placed back into their natural setting at a lake shore once inhabited by the Snakes Indians (including Northern Paiute, Pitt and Shoshone) for a period of nearly 7,000 years. These semi-nomadic gatherers inhabited the Lakeview region of Oregon. Artifacts are quite similar to those displayed at the Favell Museum in Klamath Falls. Many of the examples on display at the museum were found during the foundation excavation while the facility was being built and represent works by the Klamath and Modoc indians. The volcanic materials from which these Mortars were made extend eastward into the Lakeview region. Our Mortar and Pestel came from a farm over 85 years ago (1920s) in that area. It is a particularly beautiful unspoiled example in unbroken condition.

Belknap Crater is a rugged, awe inspiring and mystical place on top of our local world here in Central Oregon. This August 1999 image of the "rough, jagged clinkery surface" was caused by the rapid cooling process from the last recent eruption. Such drama takes your breath away. Belknap is a region that defies the old cliche... "once you've seen it, you've seen it all." One cannot help but be impressed by the vast scale of volcanism. This fisheye image captures my first impression of this foreboding landscape. It just strikes you as something quite alien and it's everywhere around you... it simply cannot be ignored.

This archival giclee print offers a bold range of film grain, color and brilliancy capturing this dramatic Belknap Crater region volcanic subject. Makes a strong impression in this larger 16x20 inch format. Note that the well defined film grain patterns lends a "pointalistic" aesthetic quality emphasizing the basalt rockery.  Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is shrink wrapped on foam core board) and ready for framing.

Windy Point stands at 4,909 feet and signals the gateway to the Belknap Crater Region. It's a wayside "must" stop along the Old MacKenzie Highway providing a dramatic vista of the basaltic lava flows scarcely two thousand years old.

This image was taken nearly ten years ago with a 16mm fisheye Nikkor to capture ALL the scene had to offer. The figure is included to give an idea of the amazing scale. The region is a rugged, awe inspiring and mystical place on top of our local world here in Central Oregon. The "rough, jagged clinkery surface" seen in the background was caused by the rapid cooling process from the last recent eruption. Such drama takes your breath away. It just strikes you as something quite alien and it's everywhere around you... it simply cannot be ignored. And it brings you back time and again to uncover more of its mysteries.

This archival giclee print offers an exquisite range of tonality and brilliancy faithfully capturing this volcanic High Cascades subject. Makes a strong impression in this larger 16x20 inch format. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is shrink wrapped on foam core board) and ready for framing.

This austere landscape rendered in black and white (quadtone) consists of basaltic rockery, bleached out trees and atmospheric skies. It was photographed from the Dee Wright Observatory at the Belknap Crater on October 18, 2008. Located in the High Cascades Plateau this region is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in the the United States. The snags punctuate the landscape with a poignant reminder of a former grandeur in a landscape almost devoid of life.

Belknap Crater is a mystical place on top of our local world here in Central Oregon where weather and light constantly change to delight the eye. This August 1999 image of the lone tree in the foreground continues to attract. Like the place itself I return to this print with its own special magic firmly grounded in the realism of a moment found and experienced. Belknap is a region that defies the old cliche... "once you've seen it, you've seen it all." It is inspiring and nurturing for the imagination... it is a sanctuary away from the more mundane and calculated workaday world. True, the "rough, jagged clinkery surface" is at the same time foreboding. This is an alien like landscape which cannot be ignored.
