Coos Bay bridge, The Sky is the Limit, Clyde Keller Kodachrome photo
The Sky is the Limit From 1978 Kodachrome Coos Bay bridge, Oregon Coast, near North Bend
At the time this photograph was made, I lived a short distance from this magnificent viewpoint in the cozy hamlet of North Bend, Oregon. This can be a magical place with warmer winters (than the Willamette valley) and plenty of atmosphere. At night one could hear fog horns in the distance from across the bay against a backdrop of stillness... really quite enchanting. The Coos Bay Bridge was designed by Conde B. McCullough (Oregon's master bridge builder of more than 200 historic bridges) utilizing a unique cantilever design constructed with curved upper and lower chords. Its 5,305 foot length was the longest of Oregon's highway system when built in 1936.

Corvette Sky, museum grade art print, original Clyde Keller photo
Corvette Sky Classic Sting Ray Car Hood Reflections of Sky and Clouds
Image captures clouds reflected on the hood of a 1966 Corvette Sting Ray. As illustrated the car's insignia is shown highlighted on the hood's mirror perfect finish. The interpretive image juxtaposes the abstraction of sky and clouds reflected into the natural deep blue of the mirror perfect finish on the car's hood with the classic Corvette checkered flag insignia. The flattened deadpan perspective (cropped in closely) heightens a sense of speed as if the raised cowling (center curvilinear vertical forms in the photo) were in flight... altogether an inspiring metaphor for this beloved era of American design. The car was featured as part of the annual Flashback Cruz held at Drake Park nearby downtown Bend, Oregon. It was reported that over 402 classic cars, 30 club cars and 70 vendor cars on display.

30x20 Inch art print Image dimensions are @ 10x28 Inches Printed on Epson Satin Paper Signed/Dated and Titled on lower white border

When you first visit Crater lake it will overwhelm you with its sheer magnitude and scale. Something very powerful occurred here and rather recently at that. This is a favorite vista located near the lodge. It is also the subject of "Wizard Island Revealed." In this panorama I wanted to give the sensation of taking it all in even beyond what the eye can naturally see. The result of this effort is a striking panorama that approaches 160 degrees from side to side. Wizard Island is shown near the center of the print. Not visible in this small web reproduction is the Phantom Ship which can be seen on the large three foot print!
"Crater Lake Panorama" faithfully captures the vivid colors of sky, water and caldera. It is claimed that Crater Lake possesses the deepest blue waters of any lake in North America. This was the perfect day to make this beautiful panorama and capture its beauty.

Crater Lake vista, The Phantom Ship, Clyde Keller photo art
The Phantom Ship View from the overlook Crater Lake National Park
The view captures a south westerly vista of Crater Lake found within the Crater Lake National Park. Shown is the Phantom Ship, a fantastic rock formation as tall as a 16 story building and the oldest exposed rock (400,000 years old) within the caldera.
The photograph was taken July 30, 2007. A Nikkor lens was employed with careful exposure to capture the detail and tonality of highly reflective highlights seen in the late afternoon on this magnificent lake.

Days of Summer, art print, impressionist sailboat, Clyde Keller photo
Days of Summer Impressionistic art print View of Olympics with sailboat
From Original Kodachrome, circa 1979
This impressionistic image of the sailboat captures a romantic feeling of reflected light under the awe of the inspiring Olympic Mountains. Even though the sailboat is far away the telephoto lens brings it and the opposite shore and the Olympic Peninsula into closer view. The bold colors and "pointalistic" fine art technique captures the reflected light off the water and with a dash of abstraction infused into the scene to make this a most aesthetically pleasing rendering of a fantastic subject.

Death of a Monument, Metolius River, Clyde Keller Photo
Death of a Monument Metolius River Headwaters Ponderosa Pine, Central Oregon
I encountered the ancient Ponderose near the headwaters of the Metolius River. An ultra-wide 10mm lens was used with our Nikon D300 to render the scale of this impressive forest scene, the tree, itself a vestige of its former grandeur, now under decay. A burst of defused sunlight breaking through overhead clouds enhances the appreciation of depth lighting up the foreground and interior of the forest scene.

Delanys Coffee House portrait, Victor's World, Clyde Keller photo
Victor's World Delany's Coffee House on Denman Street Vancouver, B.C. Canada
Victor made me feel quite welcome as he opened up his world to us in an exchange of bright conversation at Delany's Coffee House in Vancouver BC, Canada. We found excellent espresso and company with this engaging Canadian at his popular hangout. One of my favorite images from the many trips to Vancouver, Canada... Victor offered great conversation and an undeniable graphic appeal with his checkered shirt and flowing beard. In this impromptu documentary photo, I struck up a conversation with Victor and was able to photograph him as we made our concurrent exchanges capturing a sureness of character and true to life.
Established in 1993 Delany's is located on Denman Street near English Bay.
Regarding the original "look" of this print... only the figure's color and his coffee cup have been preserved while the surrounding ambient environment is entirely in monochrome.

End of an Era, Scoggin Valley pioneer portrait, Clyde Keller photo
End of an Era Felix McCullough, Scoggin Valley Pioneer Overlooking His Farm, Now Covered by Water In 1977 I created a documentary project with the intention of capturing descendants of the Tuality Plains settlers of Washington County, Oregon. Pictured is surviving pioneer, Felix McCullough overlooking his Scoggin Valley Farm -- now covered by water from a reservoir reclamation project. Photo was taken over 33 years ago. Felix was representative of the valley's pioneer heritage... and the last of a then living heritage. This image was featured on the cover of the photographic calendar entitled, "Valley People."

Fallen Cherry Blossom Sky, original Clyde Keller photo art print
Fallen Cherry Blossom Sky Old Sellwood neighborhood, Portland, Oregon
Every year Cherry Blossoms bloom and fall on this Sellwood walkway. The beauty of this captured moment (April 23, 2003) lasted less than a few hours before the encircling patterns of fallen petals were whisked away or trampled upon. For the making of this dreamy image I watched the petals fall, accumulate, and then waited for favorable lighting. The concept for this somewhat abstract image is helped by picturing the grass as a hill and the petals like stars overhead in a sky. The swirling patterns of fallen petals become like constellations... creating an altogether dreamy abstraction or concrete reality... a double meaning for your choice!

Floating Pine Cone, Oregon Cascades, Clyde Keller Photo
Floating Pine Cone Oregon High Cascades near Windy Point Belknap Crater region
My ultra-wide angle close-up offers an impressive view of the forested area near Belknap Crater. This early Spring landscape captures an isolated Pine Cone as it is revealed by the melting snow. Because of the wonderful qualities of the lens... its wide scope makes the Pine Cone seems to float in a dreamy continuum. Print is hand signed (light fast archival black ink) and dated on the white border beneath the image. Print is imbued with an iridescent (vivid) wide range color gamut which heightens the sense of the picturesque elements.

Foggy Smith Tower, 1981 Seattle Pioneer Square, Clyde Keller Photo
Foggy Smith Tower Pioneer Square View Seattle, Washington
From Original Kodachrome, circa 1981
This impressionistic image of the Smith Tower was taken in January of 1981. The fog was thick and partially obscured the view of Seattle's most venerable historic building, once it's most modern "skyscraper" and now revered for its beauty.
This is a most romantic rendering taken with a time exposure on a tripod to lend an ethereal feeling-- of being engulfed by the fog. I couldn't help but be reminded of the fantastic Flatiron Building in Manhattan, New York-- photographed by Alfred Steiglitz over 107 years ago.

Hedy Lamarr Backseat,, Hollywood movie star dream, Clyde Keller photo
Hedy Lamarr Backseat Hollywood movie star dream Summer classic car show at Seaside, Oregon Annual Event, photographed in 1998
Classic American Cars abounded on Main Street in the tourist town of Seaside, located on the North Oregon Coast for this annual summertime event. This image of 1940s Hollywood movie star, Hedy Lamarr, caught my eye with its noirish window lighting as we strolled west towards the famous turnaround which ends with a fabulous view of the beach. She invited me in, so to speak for a double take on this dreamy star's legacy replete with a pair of gloves and an "adorable" stuffed poodle. I liked her better as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah, but this staged setup was the perfect sendoff for a walk through nostalgia on a lovely summer afternoon.

Homage to Timothy Leary, Psychedelic Turn On, Clyde Keller art print
Psychedelic Turn On Turn On - Tune In - Drop Out Timothy Leary Interpretive Art Print Here is my homage to the king of LSD from my original negatives. In 1967 Leary made waves across the United States with his use of psychedelic drugs. During his speech (at Portland State) he kept everyone guessing as to whether or not the "colorless and oderless" liquid he drank before a thousand or so students at the College Center was the real deal. My art print rekindles the psychedelic flavor of the times. The original black and white film was converted to a high contrast lith (some years back) and just revisited in an inventive interpretation, born anew. Please note that the typography surrounding the image is for display and the fine art print features by signature. Please note that this image is included in the Ken Kesey Section as it pertains to "LSD and The Politics of Ecstasy" in Mark Christensen's book on Ken Kesey entitled, "Acid Christ." As of February 2011 it is headed towards multiple printings with a PB forthcoming - Fall 2011.

About my portraits: Timothy Leary spoke at Portland State College in 1967. After his appearance I found him sitting alone in a smaller annex room reserved for teachers eating lunch. I approached him with my motorized Nikon in hand and sat down to join him at his table. We started talking and I commenced to "blow" a roll of 35mm film while we made conversation. In this sequence Leary is reacting to my photographing him- just like someone might do alone in and old fashioned photomat parlor- cruising from one inventive pose change to another.
