Shirley Chisholm Speech Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005) New York City, July 1976
I photographed Shirley Chisholm in New York as part of my photojournalism documentary coverage of the 1976 Democratic Convention which led to the nomination of Jimmy Carter. She appeared outdoors near Madison Square Garden with an entourage of supporters speaking out for civil rights and womens rights movement issues including gay rights issues that are now embodied in the platform by the National Organization for Women Chisholm is an important figure in American history well known for her activism for the advancement of women's issues, civil and human rights issues and for concerns for the poor. She was a Congresswoman, representing New York's 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983.
