Frances Fox Piven is a distinguished professor of political science and sociology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. As an educator, and author she has worked tirelessly for nearly four decades with issues concerning the poor and the disadvantaged. She is a member of the Democratic Party and has always worked within the mainstream of American politics.
Because of the recent and continuing barrage of death threats against Piven, I am offering my vintage 1976 portrait of her as someone I both admire and have followed since first meeting her in 1976. I met her withinin the framework of an event in part sponsored by the Democratic Party and in support for legislation that would have created full employment, an idea that still has merit in our current atmosphere of home foreclosures and job losses.
The "obsessive attacks" making the news are from TV commentator Glenn Beck. For nearly two years (according to Piven) Beck has falsely accused her of being a Revolutionary, Socialist or Communist, essentially scaring his viewers into believing that she must be stopped. Beck uses inflammatory, violent rhetoric and imagery comparing her to Nazis and more. He strikes fear into his viewers warning that she is trying to "crash the system" - that she is undermining American Democracy. He ignores the fact that she has devoted her life to the principle that "Democracy rests on inclusive participation by an entire population" as she has stated many times.
These attacks on Piven were recently highlighted on the Democracy Now television program in which Piven was an invited guest. She made several comments about the numerous death threats she has received since Beck began attacking her. It was pointed out that while Beck was not directly advocating violence he was literally giving his listeners the "road map" to then act against her, possibly leading to her death. These unnerving threats are published in his blog entitled The Blaze. Beck has yet to remove any of the death threats made by these bloggers as of January 20, 2011.
In her final statement on the Democracy Now TV interview, Piven clarifies what she feels is the real threat that Beck's hate speech represents.
Piven states: "Democracy demands that people have some understanding of what's going on, of what there own interests are, of who their enemies are. And, moneyed propagandists have taken advantage of that to create a demonology in which it is the democratic left that is the source of all our troubles. This is the most frightening development rather than the kind of nutty death threats. It's a rather frightening development because it raises the question of whether a democracy can survive and re-emerge with any kind of health in the face of these enormous propaganda capacities (Rupert Murdoch & Company) and in that sense it is Murdoch not Beck who is the more important target."
The idea of indirectly empowering people to acts of violence by our leaders or pundits is extremely dangerous. It has led in the past to wholesale genocide with over 50 million deaths throughout the world since the end of WWII. Genocide begins within the framework of false hate speech and the sanctioning of violence made by leaders who have ordinary people do their killing for them.
At the time of this 1976 portrait, Piven (now 78 years old) was invited to participate in a conference where the issues of full employment (Humphrey Hawkins Bill) were under discussion. She along with Michael Harrington, author of "The Other America" spoke about the plight of the unemployed. In this portrait she is addressing many hundreds of people who came to listen to her and others.

As a complement to my recent Julian Assange Art Print here is my tribute to Robert Kennedy who championed dissent and peace.

Robert was a living embodiment of his slain brother. He represents the resurrection of the promise that he and his brother embodied while in the White House. That restoration, after Dallas, took many forms: Civil Rights at home, Human Rights abroad and the end of Apartheid for all people. His message and charisma and his policies were understood as ending all of the cruel and artificial divisions allowing him to bring a process of healing between people.
In this art print Robert is shown making a stump speech captured during a whistle stop train tour. His inspirational words are shown as a backdrop (behind him across the sky) in a beautiful archival print. RFK argued for ending the War in Vietnam, citing that the North Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, had quoted the American Declaration of Independence as their inspiration for them to declare independence from the French. Robert embraced peaceful coexistence in an era of militarism and like his brother was receptive to a standing down from armed rivalry with Russia. As visionaries the Kennedys stood for ideals that could not only lead to peaceful coexistence but transcend the antagonisms generated by opposing social systems.

“What the students of Poland now fight for, what the students of Czechoslovakia appear to have won is not a victory of ideology; it is a victory of the spirit. This spirit has been heard in the defined courtrooms of Moscow, in the streets of Spain, and in the schools all over the United States. It is he spirit of youth. It's not a time of life, but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a preference for courage over timidity; of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. It is the spirit which knows the difference between force and reason. It does not accept the failures of today as the excuse for the cruelties of tomorrow. It knows the wisdom of Archimedes and that says, 'Give me a place to stand and I can move the world,' and youth is finding a place to stand. That is the spirit I want to see return to the United States of America and that is why I'm running for President of the United States.” RFK- April 17, 1968

Here is my homage to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange who had won in the reader's poll conducted by Time Magazine as the Person of the Year. My art print incorporates public domain images and text of code from the recent Embassy Cables, in a new creative design that underscores Julian's philosophy and commitment to full internet transparency in this information age. The image doubles as one of those rare instances where my graphic approach links up with contemporary world views. Assange is a symbol for those who yearn to live in a world free from hegemony, secrets, lies, wars and repression. His work is widely supported throughout the world (75% from December 21st Poll by ZDnet) more so than it is domestically at 51%, but the fact is that he has not been charged with breaking any existing laws throughout the world and WikiLeaks release of confidential documents is supported by every major newspaper worldwide as being in the public's best interest. In a recent article appearing in Spiegel International, Thomas Darnstadt comments that, "Since 9/11, press freedom in the West has come under attack as governments argue that national security is more important than transparency. But the hunt for WikiLeaks is a greater danger to democracy than any information that WikiLeaks might reveal."

On February 2, 2011, Wikileaks was nominated for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize according to news reports appearing on RAWSTORY. Norwegian, parliamentarian Snorre Valen, Wikileaks was "one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency... By disclosing information about corruption, human rights abuses and war crimes, Wikileaks is a natural contender for the Noel Peace Prize."

The Trojan Nuclear Power Plant was a pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant located near Rainier, Oregon. Here is an imaginative view and rendering of the heart of its controversial reactor core gleaming with its nuclear class rod travel housings and exotic metallurgy. To see it in the flesh was most impressive as it strangely resembled a high tech pipe organ. My vantage point looks up at the reactor core from the floor of the pressurized containment vessel, a rare view indeed. The image was captured before the plant opened in October 1975. It operated for 16 years before it was shut down in 1993. Of note is that the cost of construction and subsequent demolition cost nearly a billion dollars in total. Its history was fraught with technical problems and safety concerns.
The Trojan Decommissioning Alliance, founded by Lloyd Marbet, led the environmental opposition staging protests. Ballot measures calling for the plant's closure were defeated in 1980, 1986, 1990 and 1992 but with PGE plant operators committing to earlier retirement than the estimated 30 years lifespan or in early 2011.
