1st round knockout, Mike Ryan
Portland, Oregon February 6, 1975
In this photo of a 1st Round Knockout, an ironic twist is added to the fate of Ray Lampkin's opponent, Mike Ryan, who is shown unconscious while Ray hugs his manager, Mike Morton. This has remained one of my favorite photojournalist photos, and was achieved by perching myself on top of the ropes for an all inclusive elevated, corner view of the ring. Photographed with a moderate 24mm Nikkor wide angle lens using Tri-X, a perfect combination to capture the event.
