BACKGROUND:

Louis Bunce attended the Museum Art School in Portland from 1925-26 as well as the Art Students League in New York from 1927-31. During the 1930s Bunce worked for the WPA Easel Project in New York and the WPA Art Center in Salem, Oregon as an instructor and assistant director. According to the biographical information obtained from the Saward Art Collection (website) "two of his murals are in the post offices in Grants Pass and St. Johns. Bunce taught at the Museum Art School in Portland until his retirement. He introduced the serigraph technique to Oregon and worked in many styles - cubism, expressionism, surrealism, and abstractionism."

"WALL"

This smaller study of a nude by Louis Bunce is not dated but was acquired in the late 1960s at the Fountain Gallery. It is similar in style and concept to "Interlude #1, a 1965-66 oil, graphite on canvas shown on the Laura Russo website archive. The signature can be viewed lower right. Condition is excellent with only minor cosmetic wear to the wood fir frame. The original hand written information is affixed to the back board of the frame with some prior water damage noted. Note the sticker top right gives both artist and title. The painting is in its original state. It is quite beautiful!
