DESCRIPTION:
This is an original fine art work by Oregon Plein-Air Impressionist Painter, Clyde Leon Keller. The painting is signed in india ink. It is not dated but has a strong color palette reminiscent of his earlier 1930s works. "Keller The Art Man" is a highly regarded Oregon based painter whose paintings span over 60 years. Keller figures prominently in the first 100 years of Oregon painters with many museum references and auction listings/sales that reflect his continued popularity. His work reflects a continued dedication to the principles of 19th century landscape impressionism with strong influences from artists of the British Royal Academy such can be found in the works by Sir Alfred East. Local early teens and twenties influences include Charles McKim and Joesph Knowles. Keller was a co-founder of The Oregon Society of Artists. Early meetings (1929) were held at his downtown Portland Art Studio and Store.
This particular work is unusual for its inclusion of the figure on a horse. His son, Clyde Leon Keller Jr., had created a wood sculpture in 1933 of a figure mounted on a horse which we have included for comparison to the painting. According to his son, Clyde Jr., this is a rare example of his father honoring his own work, in this case a figure on a horse. Other rare examples (from the 1930s) include hunting and fishing subject matter Keller Sr. used to honor his son. The wood sculpture is NOT FOR SALE, but we thought you'd enjoy seeing it. The painting shows bold use of color and deft brush work. In short, one of his better works transformed by the figure on the horse.
CONDITION: The signed painting and frame are in excellent and near pristine condition. One of Keller's business cards has been attached to the back.
