Photographed in September of 1977 and part of a popular regional photographic calendar entitled "Valley People." The documentary project concerned documenting descendants of the Tuality Plains settlers of Washington County, Oregon.
Shown are Birgetta Nixon and her grand-daughter with kittens near Cherry Grove -- taken over 32 years ago. The figures are representative of the last of a then living heritage. Birgetta was well known as the local historian... keeping track of Cherry Grove's Lore in her scrapbooks including several published books on its history.
One of my favorite images from the 1978 Valley People Calendar... and one of my favorite subjects and friend. In this impromptu photo we had just come out of her house (where we had just looked at some of her scrap books) and were greeted by her grand-daughter. Soon we were in a mad camp romp as Birgetta raced to gather nearby kitty cats for a "portrait" of herself and her grand-daughter. Old tools, buckets, nick knacks and farm irons can be seen on the side of her house in the background. Visiting with her was always free spirited... filled with an atmosphere of the unusual, the unexpected delight.

Elderly Couple, UNDER THE AUGUST SUN, Clyde Keller Photo
DOCUMENTARY ARTS PORTFOLIO
"UNDER THE AUGUST SUN" depicts an older couple enjoying a summer day in their yard. The scene was photographed in an older Portland neighborhood near Mt. Tabor. The subjects, then in their nineties, were the first to move into the neighborhood decades ago. The donut holes in the background are the result from the special 500mm telephoto lens in use, a limited production Nikkor telephoto that employed mirrors in place of glass elements. The effect adds to the mood complementing the woman's paisley pattern dress... this portrait has proven to be a favorite since it was taken, a moment observed over 44 years ago.

In the Spring of 1973 I was nosing out interesting folk for possible photographs who lived in the rural hinterlands of the small coastal community of Nehalem on the Oregon Coast. The Thaxter's proved to be a delight, a retired elderly couple interested in gardening, wildflowers and herbs. They are shown standing by their primitive cottage during a lull in the drizzle, typical for coastal weather. It remains a favorite feature photograph and portrait. Years later, the charm of the Thaxter's fairytale continues to resonate, with its straightforward joyous simplicity.

No. 2677, UNION PACIFIC LOCOMOTIVE, Kodachrome, Clyde Keller Photo
"No. 2677" Union Pacific Locomotive Frame under the North Bend RR Trestle Oregon Coast
16x20 Inch Archival B&W Giclee Print Image Dimensions are @17x11.5 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin Paper Signed/Dated on lower white border
Clear Sleeved on Foam Core, Corner Mounted Shipped Flat, Insured with Tracking
From Kodachrome Original
At the time this photograph was made, I lived a short distance from this dramatic viewpoint in the cozy hamlet of North Bend, Oregon. The Union Pacific Locomotive was captured with a 500mm tele lens framed as it left the trestle. You can see the engineers in the cab-- this is a beautifully detailed image.
Adjacent to the trestle is the famous Coos Bay Bridge designed by Conde B. McCullough (Oregon's master bridge builder of more than 200 historic bridges) utilizing a unique cantilever design constructed with curved upper and lower chords. Its 5,305 foot length was the longest of Oregon's highway system when built in 1936. I have posted an landscape of this bridge separately. It is entitled, "The Sky Is The Limit."

"CHET IN HIS MOUNTAINDALE CABIN"
Seated in his one room Mountaindale Cabin is Chet, a reclusive hermit, here shown lighting his pipe. I photographed him in February of 1974 as part of the documentary project. Although shy, Chet was most accommodating when I asked him if he would let me photograph him. I asked Chet to act as if I wasn't there. The resulting portraits were both naturalistic and telling of a more simplified and harsher rural life. Looking at Chet by the window (his only source of lighting) I was reminded of Roy Stryker's WPA (Farm Security Administration) efforts from the 1930s depression. In these rural hinter lands, some people lived in an absence of electricity with wood as the only source of heat. These images are from a collection that reveal the impact poverty has upon the lives of those who share its "face."

The wide up-close view of the historic Gravestone is rendered in an almost 3D like perspective that is most inviting the eye. The detail is enhanced by the use of an ultra sharp 55mm "Micro" Nikkor lens. Makes a strong impression, especially with the Queen Ann Lace "dancing" throughout the composition. Suitable for immediate safe viewing (the print is shrink wrapped on foam core board) and ready for framing.
Graveyards figured largely into my pictorial landscapes from the late 1960s throughout the next decade. They were incorporated into various publishing and photography projects with a bias towards their historical relevance and pictorial splendor. This particular 1969 image remains a favorite, taken at a family pioneer cemetery very near the end of day. The light is revealing of the granite gravestone and the Queen Anne's Lace making them seem to do a ballet of sorts against the shadowy rural background which includes an older wood frame barn.
This photograph symbolizes a feeling of icons frozen in time against the backdrop of rapid change. It is a meditation upon the past all too quickly forgotten, brought out from the darkness to be remembered once again.

Pretty Boy Floyds, Clyde Keller Photo, PIANIST BARRY BARNHAM
1975 DOCUMENTARY ARTS PORTFOLIO
"PIANIST BARRY BARNHAM"
In 1975 Pretty Boy Floyds was a tavern frequented by many of Portland's writers, artists and poets. The pianist captured here, Barry Barnham, with sleeves rolled up in a Hoagy Carmichael jazz kind of way... gave in an impromptu performance that electrified the room... that went particularly well with the burgers and beer served by the tavern. Of course the establishment is long gone, and so this photograph is a personal remembrance for a place, an era and a time that served as a melting pot for some of Portland's finest, circa 1975.

"RFK WHISTLE STOP" Albany, Oregon Train Depot, May 18, 1968 RFK Speech: American Foreign Policy, Vietnam and Nationalism
In this classic piece of Americana I was able to photograph one of the last "whistle stops" with Robert Kennedy addressing a crowd of supporters from inside a caboose. Robert is shown in partial silhouette as I peered out from the rear of the Caboose interior, north towards the Albany Train Depot. I waited for Kennedy to hold his hand out to greet the crowd in a sequence of 6 exposures... the result is a wonderful "decisive moment" catching the crowd unanimously in rapt attention. Selected by the RFK Center for Human Rights in a Fall Promotion for the renaming of the Triborough Bridge (RFK Bridge) with the NYC Transit Authority. Voted "Best Picture" by Pacific NW Photogtaphers at the 2001 Digicraft Annual Awards.

Seattle Pike Place Farmer's Market
"MARKET MUSICIAN"
This poetic image of a street musician holding his mandolin is from a larger 1980 art calendar project entitled "Market & Square." Seattle often has a blue cast to its light, particularly in the darker months and especially late in the afternoon on partially cloudy days. The concurrence of the ferry boat in the distance completes the picture to capture a wistful feeling and romance of the Pike Place Market overlooking Puget Sound, here observed in a special moment made nearly 30 years ago.
