1968 portrait, Senator Wayne Morse, Clyde Keller photo
Clyde Keller documentary photo Senator Wayne Morse May 1968 portrait Vietnam war protest, Portland State College
In this vintage documentary arts portrait, I captured Oregon's Wayne Morse, one of two U.S. Senators to oppose the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution leading to the escalation of the Vietnam War. It was opposed in the Senate only by Senators Wayne Morse (D–OR) and Ernest Gruening (D–AK). The portrait was captured with a then newer high speed color film and then "pushed" 2 stops with custom development. I used my motorized Nikon F film camera equipped with a 300mm Nikkor tele lens.

Pictured in relief are participants in a performance arts dramatization of support for Cuba and to "Break The Blockade" against this country's trade and economic embargo against them. The protest against the embargo directed at Cuba was designed to end the strangulation of the Cuban economy by multinational corporate and banking interests that wanted to end the socialist experiment. My new Art Print commemorates the continued protest that is supported by a majority of countries throughout the world to end the embargo. The concert (held in 1976 at the old Academy of Music in NYC) was electrifying and my first exposure to the poetry of feminist political activist, June Jordan. The concert included June's recital from her 1972 work, "Poems of Exile and Return." Included in this small portfolio are images drawn from the concert including music and theatrical expressions against US Imperialism. The staged event memorializes this protest (which banners boldly declared as a blockade) and sent a message for ending the needless cruelty against Cuba which endures to this day nearly 35 years later.
On the day President John F. Kennedy died a personal representative had been directed to meet with Castro about the possibility of normalizing the relationship between Cuba and the United States. With Kennedy's death the hope for the normalization of relations between the two countries died. Castro has publicly stated in a recent interview that if President John F. Kennedy had not been assassinated, there was no question but that relations between Cuba and the United States would have probably improved. Instead, the economic embargo has continued for decades. Kennedy's views challenged the status-quo of the Washington D.C. power brokers by calling for more peaceful forms of cooperation with the Soviet Union and its allies. Kennedy stood for curtailing the devastating influence of U.S. hegemony toward the third world. He was sympathetic to nationalistic movements throughout the third world because he understood the anti-colonial sentiments of the peoples of Africa, Latin America and Asia. Now, 34+ years later this photograph still dramatizes the continued frustration many have throughout the world with the imperial aspects of American Foreign Policy.

1976 Cuba Concert, Uncle Sam Protest, Clyde Keller photo
Uncle Sam Protest In Concert With Cuba, Break The Blockade (Economic Trade Embargo) July 24, 1976 NYC, Academy of Music Concert Hall Stage Performance Documentary Photograph by Clyde keller
In this documentary arts image Uncle Sam is classically posed riding atop the backs of workers in a double entendre illustrating the exploitative effects of the American Empire upon the impoverished Third World. Its biting satire brutalizes the symbolism of the American icon inverting its intended meaning in a protest against Cold War tactics. The staged event memorializes this protest and sent a message for ending the economic trade embargo against Cuba which endures to this day nearly 35 years later.

1976 NYC, Shirley Chisholm Speech, vintage Clyde Keller photo
Shirley Chisholm Speech Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005) New York City, July 1976
I photographed Shirley Chisholm in New York as part of my photojournalism documentary coverage of the 1976 Democratic Convention which led to the nomination of Jimmy Carter. She appeared outdoors near Madison Square Garden with an entourage of supporters speaking out for civil rights and womens rights movement issues including gay rights issues that are now embodied in the platform by the National Organization for Women
Chisholm is an important figure in American history well known for her activism for the advancement of women's issues, civil and human rights issues and for concerns for the poor. She was a Congresswoman, representing New York's 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1968, she became the first black woman elected to Congress.[ 16x20 Inch Art Print Image Dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border Clear Sleeved on foam core Shipped flat, insured with delivery confirmation Shirley Chisholm Speech Copyright © 1976 Clyde Keller

1977 Portrait, Governor Tom McCall Speech Writing, Clyde Keller Photo
Governor Tom McCall Speech Writing Wages, Welfare or What Conference Portland, Oregon 1977 Thomas Lawson McCall (March 22, 1913 – January 8, 1983) was an American politician and journalist in the state of Oregon. A Republican, he was the 30th Governor of Oregon from 1967 to 1975.
At the time of this 1977 portrait, Tom McCall was invited to participate in a conference where the issues of full employment (Humphrey Hawkins Bill/passed Oct. 1978) were under discussion. He along with Michael Harrington, author of The Other America, and Francis Fox Piven (subject to recent hate speech attacks by Glen Beck and right wing bloggers) spoke about the plight of the unemployed. In this portrait he is preparing for a speech he will shortly deliver before an assembly of several hundred people.

1977, Frances Fox Piven, A Democratic Vision, Clyde Keller photo
Frances Fox Piven A Democratic Vision Glenn Beck Hate Speech Dissent Article Photo and Article by Clyde Keller "Democracy demands that people have some understanding of what's going on, of what there own interests are, of who their enemies are. And, moneyed propagandists have taken advantage of that to create a demonology in which it is the democratic left that is the source of all our troubles."
Francis Fox Piven on Democracy Today
Frances Fox Piven is a distinguished professor of political science and sociology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. As an educator, and author she has worked tirelessly for nearly four decades with issues concerning the poor and the disadvantaged. She is a member of the Democratic Party and has always worked within the mainstream of American politics.
Because of the recent and continuing barrage of death threats against Piven, I am offering my vintage 1976 portrait of her as someone I both admire and have followed since first meeting her in 1976. I met her withinin the framework of an event in part sponsored by the Democratic Party and in support for legislation that would have created full employment, an idea that still has merit in our current atmosphere of home foreclosures and job losses.
The "obsessive attacks" making the news are from TV commentator Glenn Beck. For nearly two years (according to Piven) Beck has falsely accused her of being a Revolutionary, Socialist or Communist, essentially scaring his viewers into believing that she must be stopped. Beck uses inflammatory, violent rhetoric and imagery comparing her to Nazis and more. He strikes fear into his viewers warning that she is trying to "crash the system" - that she is undermining American Democracy. He ignores the fact that she has devoted her life to the principle that "Democracy rests on inclusive participation by an entire population" as she has stated many times.
These attacks on Piven were recently highlighted on the Democracy Now television program in which Piven was an invited guest. She made several comments about the numerous death threats she has received since Beck began attacking her. It was pointed out that while Beck was not directly advocating violence he was literally giving his listeners the "road map" to then act against her, possibly leading to her death. These unnerving threats are published in his blog entitled The Blaze. Beck has yet to remove any of the death threats made by these bloggers as of January 20, 2011.
In her final statement on the Democracy Now TV interview, Piven clarifies what she feels is the real threat that Beck's hate speech represents.
Piven states: "Democracy demands that people have some understanding of what's going on, of what there own interests are, of who their enemies are. And, moneyed propagandists have taken advantage of that to create a demonology in which it is the democratic left that is the source of all our troubles. This is the most frightening development rather than the kind of nutty death threats. It's a rather frightening development because it raises the question of whether a democracy can survive and re-emerge with any kind of health in the face of these enormous propaganda capacities (Rupert Murdoch & Company) and in that sense it is Murdoch not Beck who is the more important target."
The idea of indirectly empowering people to acts of violence by our leaders or pundits is extremely dangerous. It has led in the past to wholesale genocide with over 50 million deaths throughout the world since the end of WWII. Genocide begins within the framework of false hate speech and the sanctioning of violence made by leaders who have ordinary people do their killing for them.
At the time of this 1976 portrait, Piven (now 78 years old) was invited to participate in a conference where the issues of full employment (Humphrey Hawkins Bill) were under discussion. She along with Michael Harrington, author of "The Other America" spoke about the plight of the unemployed. In this portrait she is addressing many hundreds of people who came to listen to her and others.

1977, Socialist, Michael Harrington Speaking, Clyde Keller photo
Documentary photo of American writer Socialist Michael Harrington Speaking Portland, Oregon, 1977 Clyde Keller's portrait of Michael Harrington was taken as part of a photo documentary project concerning a national conference held in Portland, Oregon concerning the topic of full employment. At the time the Humphrey Hawkins Bill, sponsored in part by former Vice president, Hubert Humphrey, was under intense discussion. The conference (Wages Welfare Or What?) became a public forum to discuss issues of employment, health care and poverty as they affected Oregonians. My portrait of Harrington was was made during an afternoon speech he made, breaking from the conference. This is a studied composition where the trees in the park blocks (with their repetitive forms) became an essential "character" in the composition. It remains an absolute favorite.
Michael Harrington is the author of "The Other America: Poverty in the United States." He is well known as a Democratic Socialist Leader in American Politics. At the time of this photo, he taught political science at Queens College in New York. He is associated for his influence on the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, especially for Johnson's infamous War On Poverty Program. Harrington helped to found the Democratic Socialist Oreganizing Committee (DSOC) which opposed the Vietnam War. 16x20 Inch Art Print Image Dimensions are @11.3x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border Clear Sleeved on foam core Shipped flat, insured with delivery confirmation This archival B&W giclee print offers an exquisite range of color, tone and brilliancy faithfully capturing this important figure in American History. 2010 Clyde Keller protest art print, The Times they are Pathetic
The Times they are Pathetic Original Clyde Keller protest art print, signed Lyrics for song by Terrence E. Paupp In this surreal, interpretive Art Print- I was inspired by prose written by my friend Terrence E. Paupp. Normally, Terry writes books about World Governance and World Peace, but with a continuing stream of dismal headlines and the feeling that our country is headed towards financial catastrophe as if we were all embarked on a doomed vessel such as the Titanic, Terry wrote this poem (or song) to relieve the stress. So, here's the inspiration which led to my own creative work in response to his sardonic lament-- and counterpoint to Bob Dylan's - Times They are a-Changin.
Lyrics:
We all live in Pathetic Times- We share a Pathetic Culture- We experience Pathetic Things-
We're exposed to Pathetic People- Who are collectively headed toward a Pathetic End And hence our lives are doomed to be Pathetic Through no fault of our own
Chorus:
Some will say the people are myopic Some will say the people are pedantic Some will say they like trivial things too much But I say they are all just Pathetic

2010 WikiLeaks poster, The Assange Tapestry, Clyde Keller Art Print
The Assange Tapestry "Free Speech, Free Assange" Large Fine Art Print of Julian Assange, WikiLeaks Founder
16x20 inch archival giclee print Printed on Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated and Titled on lower white border
Clear sleeved on foam core Shipped flat, insured with delivery confirmation
Here is my homage to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange who had won in the reader's poll conducted by Time Magazine as the Person of the Year. My art print incorporates public domain images and text of code from the recent Embassy Cables, in a new creative design that underscores Julian's philosophy and commitment to full internet transparency in this information age. The image doubles as one of those rare instances where my graphic approach links up with contemporary world views.
Assange is a symbol for those who yearn to live in a world free from hegemony, secrets, lies, wars and repression. His work is widely supported throughout the world (75% from December 21st Poll by ZDnet) more so than it is domestically at 51%, but the fact is that he has not been charged with breaking any existing laws throughout the world and WikiLeaks release of confidential documents is supported by every major newspaper worldwide as being in the public's best interest. In a recent article appearing in Spiegel International, Thomas Darnstadt comments that, "Since 9/11, press freedom in the West has come under attack as governments argue that national security is more important than transparency. But the hunt for WikiLeaks is a greater danger to democracy than any information that WikiLeaks might reveal."

2011 interpretive art print, Garden of Atonement, Clyde Keller photo
Garden of Atonement
Interpretive surreal fine art print Included in Clyde Keller's meditative Mask series This surreal fine art print was produced from film and digital elements. It is a contemplative iconographic work, a homage to ancient influences as they leave their mark in our modern subconscious mind. The pharaohs were photographed with Kodak 2475 recording film in NW Portland, Oregon at night and are part of my 1977 Doubles Series of intriguing pairs, double entendre and concurrent coincidences. The mask is a familiar icon seen in several of my works during the past year and is used here set (in multiple transparency) against the backdrop of an Old Portland neighborhood picket fence and rose garden. The mask was photographed with my Nikon D300 and a macro Nikkor lens and the garden scene with an older Cybershot (Sonnar lens) back in 2006. 2011 Veterans Day Parade Marchers, Clyde Keller photo
Veterans Day Parade Marchers November11, 2011 - Bend, Oregon We honor those who have so bravely served but also remember to not ignore the conditions which have led to our current malaise. A friend, Randolph D. Hedgebeth, commented yesterday on how "sadder and angrier" he has become with each passing Veterans Day.
He wrote:
"As a small boy I knew the importance of 'Remembering' and honoring those who died for our freedoms. From the Revolution to the Korean War it was a thing of honor to serve and revere those who served and died for us all. Today, the day, Veterans Day, increasingly dishonors those who have fallen, for it is no longer for this country. The Corporate interests have bought the politicians who raise, what amounts to a State operated private military establishment to serve the special interests. This 'Army' now fights illegal "wars" in which our enlisted citizenry serve and die.
Fighting for Freedom was last fought in the Korean War. Few operations since have been to serve the citizenry of this country but has been at the beck and call of increasingly global mega corporations of which the oil interests are but one."
Our military towers over all of the other governments throughout the world both in spending and operations with over 850+ bases worldwide. It is pervasive and it touches upon the lives of everyone everywhere. The adversity caused by our military actions cannot be ignored. The best use of Veterans Day is to protest against the conditions which are so harmful and devastating not only for the soldiers but for the well being of humanity. It is time to stop the flag waving and propaganda associated with Veteran's Day. It is though the misuse of patriotism that the military machine continues to corrupt and inspire a false sense of who we are. We need to seek a newer world free from the ravages of war even as we honor those who so bravely served. 16x20 inch archival giclee art print Image dimensions are @14x17 inches Heavyweight Epson Satin paper Signed/Dated on lower white border

In this documentary image supporters for the International Day of Peace gathered on the Portland Bridge on September 21, 2010. Pictured is Meg Brookover, and other members of Code Pink and supporters who continue to advance the ideas for a world without war. "American Corporate Flag" Occupy Walden Protest Rallies Bond, Street Bend, Oregon
December 5, 2011 - A protestor is shown holding a protest art rendition of the American flag replete with many of the major U.S. Corporations represented in place of the 50 stars. Corporations are being targeted in their relationship with Wall Street and financial institutions at the heart of a climate of greed and corruption. Other protestors hold signs which declare, "I Am The 99%" in reference to the richest one percent who act unilaterally outside the boundaries of domestic and international laws.

Police arrested a total of 14 protesters in Bend and Medford Monday night after they refused to leave the offices of Representative Greg Walden.
The "Occupy Walden" rallies drew inspiration from the Occupy Wall Street Movement.
In Bend and Medford, protesters set up shop in Walden’s offices for the better part of the day, refusing to leave until their demands were met. Protesters also gathered in La Grande and Hood River where they shouted slogans and carried signs saying "we are the 99 percent."
Chris Lawler is a student at Central Oregon Community College. He says the group wants Walden to hold 5 town halls in 5 months, including one during the Christmas recess. He says announcements for previous town halls were given with too little notice.
"He never gives people who disagree with some of these things a chance to speak. And if you don’t listen to people who do disagree with us, then you’re not going to understand why it’s not working for a lot of people," he said.
A spokesman for Walden says the congressman held 14 town hall meetings in the district this year. The last one was held this past August in La Pine.

Occupy Wall Street Protest Rally "Anonymous V Protestor" October 29, 2011 Bend, Oregon
One of several new documentary photos showing participants in the October 29, 2011 protest against the Wall Street/Financial institutions. The Saturday event commenced at Brandis Square in downtown Bend, Oregon. Pictured upfront is an anonymous protestor wearing the famous mask from the film, "V is for Vendetta" at a street corner intersection in Bend, Oregon. In total there were three hundred plus estimated participants who marched from Brandis Square south to Franklin Street and then east to 3rd in a grand three mile circle to make their way back to the downtown area and the Deschutes County Courthouse where a protest and rally were held. As shown in the background-- protestors gather on Third Street at the Greenwood intersection to demonstrate in solidarity. All four corners of the intersection were occupied to make a compelling statement and ask people to honk in support.
This is said to be a revolution of consciousness not limited by a single minded political "platform" transcending national boundaries throughout the world. Well educated people are demonstrating in cities throughout the world, especially in European cities where turnouts are often in the hundreds of thousands.

Imagine Peace Marchers, protest art, Bend, Oregon, Clyde Keller photo
Imagine Peace Marchers Art of Protest Graphic Poster
Here is a strong poster image based upon my documentary photo showing participantswho joined the March 17, 2007 Peace March launched at Brandis Square in downtown Bend, Oregon. It is an iterpretive print with bold colorization and sharp detail helping to emphsize the solidarity of the anti-war statements made by the protesters.
Similar marches were held that weekend nationally over the St. Patricks day weekend. The "Imagine Peace" March was organized by Ray Duray with the support of many concerned Citizens. Organizations such as the Central Oregon Progressive Alliance, C. O. Peace Network, Deschutes Democrats, Central Oregon labor Council, Human Dignity Coalition, Amnesty International, World Can't Wait, Sierra Club and others helped to attract many participants who each contributed with various forms of anti-war expression including placards [as pictured] costumes and theatrical props such as stilts. The group marched to City Hall taking a tour through the main downtown arterials leading to a grand loop moving away from and back to the downtown area, culminating at the historic "Old Church" where films were shown.
My art print was featured in a show curated by Tracy Miller, entitled, "Art of Protest, End of an Error" held at the end of 2008 in Bend, Oregon.
